Kate Garraway shares daughter Darcey's heartbreaking message to the nation

Kate Garraway has opened up about her 14-year-old daughter Darcey’s struggles with the national lockdown.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband Derek Draper remains in hospital following his coronavirus battle last year.

Darcey and her brother Billy, 11, were recently finally allowed to see their dad for the first time following his admission to hospital in March.

On today’s show Kate and Ben Shepherd were chatting to Dr Hilary Jones about the lockdown when she revealed Darcey’s heartbreaking message for the nation.

Relaying what her daughter had told her, Kate, 53, said: “Darcey says, ‘I just want to tell everyone please follow the rules everyone because I can’t stand this any longer’.

Kate added: “And I think that is the answer, please lets stick to it this time and hopefully we’ll get through it.”

Dr Hilary also argued that it was wrong to put a deadline on when the latest lockdown measures could end.

The TV doctor said: “I think putting a time deadline on anything now is a mistake, I think offering people the promise of coming out of lockdown by the end of February, by the middle of March, it’ll only be right to come out of lockdown when its safe to do so.

The presenters agreed with the medic’s views.

Kate also claimed the mental toll of the latest lockdown on children will be massive.

Ben added: “By putting a date on it, it gives us a target to aim for.

“And even if that shifts and even if there are a lightening of restrictions but it doesn’t stop completely. Giving a target is such an important thing.”

Although Derek has beaten coronavirus, the condition gave him serious health complications and he is fighting for his life.

Kate and her kids were able to visit Derek in hospital at Christmas.

Kate explained during the show that the visit it made it even sadder seeing how different he is now since Covid-19 affected him so horribly.

Earlier this week Kate discussed her sadness over not being able to see Derek due to lockdown on Good Morning Britain.

After revealing she was able to visit Derek in hospital over the festive period, she revealed she can’t now due to England’s new nationwide lockdown.

Kate said: “Instantly, now I’m in a position where even I can’t visit, so I’ve not been able to see him.

She continued: “Yeah, we’re into lockdown, no visits at all, which I hope doesn’t continue for the whole of lockdown because I think that will be very impactful.”
