Kate Garraway shares Derek's agony in 'better moments' as he fights to wake up

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway opened up about her husband Derek’s “agony” as she shared an update about his health battle on The One Show this week.

Speaking to Alex Jones and Michael Ball, Kate spoke about Derek’s health, saying if it is “tough” on her, it’s even worse for her husband.

Derek has been in hospital since March 2020 after falling ill with coronavirus, later being placed into a medically induced coma to aid his recovery.

Kate is set to open up about Derek’s heartbreaking battle to recover from Covid in an ITV documentary which airs on March 23, titled Finding Derek.

The ITV presenter said that viewers will see some of Derek’s “better moments”, but warned that they would be heartbreaking to watch.

She said: “You’ll see some of the better moments, even though they are heartbreaking, where he comes up and then you see what must be agony for him.

“He’s lived on his wit, and suddenly his brain, which we know controls the body, is no longer his friend and he’s fighting to get out.

“So it’s very very tough, but I think if it’s tough for me it must be even tougher for him.”

Kate also gave an update to Derek’s condition, saying: “Derek is an extreme case. What he had is a prolonged disorder of consciousness which means there is reaction, it’s not like the COVID we see where people are lying there in a vegetative state – he opens his eyes.

“Before Christmas there was lots of progress with words and communication but what I feel like is I’m on a lifeboat somehow and he’s coming up and down.

“You’re on this precipice trying to hold on to him and there are moments when he bubbles up and you have some contact. It feels like you’re having to fill him with so much positivity because he’s going to sink down.”

A trailer has been released on ITV ahead of the documentary, where viewers could see a glimpse of Derek in his hospital bed.

Kate could be seen FaceTiming him from home, as she couldn’t visit him at certain times during the year as hospitals didn’t allow visitors during the pandemic, as she shouted: “Derek, I miss you!” down the phone.

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs on ITV on Tuesday March 23 at 9pm.
