Kate Garraway shares new hope for husband Derek and believes he 'will improve'

Kate Garraway has revealed her new hopes for her husband Derek Draper, and says she believes his health will improve after his year in hospital fighting Coronavirus.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, is now caring for Derek who recently returned home to his family after the heartbreaking year in hospital where he entered a coma.

This also comes after Kate shared Derek’s sweet first words to their 11-year-old son Billy in her emotional interview to Lorraine on ITV last week (4 May).

Kate was feeling hopeful about her husband’s road to recovery as she posted a new garden snap to fans on Instagram.

In the flowery snap, Kate can be seen smiling widely as she sits on her outdoor lawn chair wearing a flower crown.

The mum-of-two posted the picture yesterday (9 May) to celebrate garden day and tells fans her garden is her “happy place”.

She captioned the post with a heartfelt message, which reads: “Happy @gardendayuk ! My garden is definitely my happy place & even though it’s not big or fancy I love being out there even if the weather isn’t perfect , because just being outside listening to the rain fall and the wind blow through the leaves is like therapy for me.”

“I can’t wait for Derek to get stronger so can get him outside too as know it’ll be good for him.

She joked: “Admittedly he may not want to wear a gorgeous blossom crown like me!”.

She also said: “But I am loving it & going to wear it all day to celebrate #gardendayUK.”

“I would love to hear how you are celebrating your outside space today & what it means to you generally so do share! #thepowerofhope.”

Kate’s garden snap follows the release of her new book, The Power of Hope which has rocketed to the top of the best seller list already.

And keeping in good spirits, she says she believes Derek “will improve” after his year in hospital.

She told Times Radio: “It’s just a whole new chapter that we’re starting on now, which is him at home and seeing how he can recover, seeing how he can recover and where he can go.”

“I believe he will improve. I think we’ve all been changed by what we’ve been through actually.

She continued: “The whole country has been changed by what we’ve been through,”.

“So I don’t think he’ll be exactly the same person again.

“I don’t think I will be actually or any of us will be. I don’t think you will be either. I think we’ve all been so affected by the pandemic generally.”

Kate announced that Derek was almost left paralysed by a rare brain inflammation – and writes in her new book that there were “fluffy white clouds floating in the top part of his head” after doctors found a bleed on his brain.

And Kate reported last week the Derek can still barely talk after almost a month of being back with her and their two children, Billy and Darcey.

She also adds that Derek needs “24-hour care” but says that “the hope is he will be able to progress”.
