Kate Garraway's absence from GMB explained after tragic Derek health update

Worried Good Morning Britain viewers questioned why Kate Garraway was absent from the show today following her husband’s battle with Covid-19.

The star, who is best known for Mid Mornings with Kate Garraway on Smooth Radio, and GMB on ITV, was not on the show today when she usually hosts Friday mornings with co-host Ben Shephard.

Fans immediately rushed to Twitter to wish her well and share their concerns as the 53-year-old broadcast journalist has been contending with the slow recovery of her hubby Derek Draper.

Derek contracted the coronavirus last year in March and was rushed to hospital before being put into an induced coma.

Kate has said he is recovering very slowly as the deadly virus left his heart and lungs scarred with holes.

However, ITV confirmed that the star is on annual leave this Friday and therefore Charlotte Hawkins filled in for her.

Many viewers rushed to Twitter to find out why Kate wasn’t on the show as they shared very kind words to the mother-of-two.

One tweeted: “@benshephard Morning Ben. Is Kate ok? She’s usually working with u on a Fri? Love Charlotte too but just checking on @kategarraway . Plse give me a shout out.”

Another wrote: “Where is Kate Garraway. Hope she is well.”

A third published: “@GMB @benshephard Where is @kategarraway today ? Hope she’s ok x.”

It comes after Lorraine Kelly told this week that her friend and colleague Kate has vowed to soldier on for the sake of kids Darcey and Billy as Derek remains in hospital.

Lorraine told OK! magazine: “Honestly, she is the bravest girl.”

The telly star continued: “I don’t know how she does it. We’ve known each other for years and I’ve always really liked her because obviously she’s really lovely but also she’s a steel magnolia.

“She’s been incredible. She says she’s not doing anything anyone else wouldn’t do but I’m not so sure about that.

“And of course, she says she’s going to keep going for the kids.”

Lorraine also said it brought it home how “serious this is”.

The star said: “We were talking about Derek and I just wanted to give her the biggest cuddle.

“Because of what happened to her, it brought it home to all of us at work just how serious this is.”

Piers had told viewers that Kate has been warned by doctors that Derek may never wake up from his coma.

He said: “Ask enough people and you’ll find somebody [who has been affected by the virus]. We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband is still in a coma from Covid.

“He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this, and it’s heartbreaking.”

He added: “We’ve got to take it seriously and we’ve got to get vaccinated as fast as possible. That’s the only way through this.”

GMB continues on Monday at 6am on ITV.
