Kate Garraway has opened up about the BAFTA award winning documentary – Finding Derek – explaining that emotional images didn’t make the cut.
The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain star wanted to do her best to issue a stark warning about her husband Derek Draper’s Covid-19 battle but admitted there were some parts that were just “too private”.
Although, she knew her husband would have wanted her to be as honest as she could, Kate knew there were heartbreaking moments that she just couldn’t share with the world.
In the documentary, Kate can be seen broken and hailing as she cried out for Derek while clutching at his photo as he lay in a hospital bed.
Those who tuned in to watch the one off episode will have seen Kate’s raw and heartfelt emotion played out on camera but according to the ITV host – there were worse moments that were never aired.
While she wanted to be truthful with what was really happening behind closed doors there were times when she “did agonise over how much to share”.
Her husband – who was an avid mental-health campaigner prior to being struck down with the deathly coronavirus that saw him hospitalised for over a year – would have wanted Kate to be frank about the subject.
This however still played havoc with Kate’s emotions as she knew there were times where the father of her two children had been at his “most vulnerable” and so the TV star decided to remove those images from Finding Derek.
In a new interview with Stella Magazine, Kate explained to Piers Morgan’s wife Celia Walden: “I didn’t want to show him at his most physically devastated and vulnerable – that was too private.
Derek is now home and surrounded by his own family but after the virus caused holes in many of his vital organs, the former political advisor still requires round-the-clock care.
There is a rota system in place for nurses to ensure that Derek is never without assistance.
Speaking about day-to-day life, Kate said: “It’s not been easy.
“Although there are these extraordinary little moments that keep you going, it’s not as though there is something every day taking us forward.
“The doctors believe that there will be a trajectory, but that it’ll be very slow.
“Derek will still sleep for 20 hours a day, for example.”
While the former lobbyist’s recovery still remains to be an uphill battle, Kate is optimistic about the future.
The ITV star added: “We’re clear now that he does understand everything that I tell him.
“He will also react with a smile or change of facial expression to the kids, so there are moments when you know he’s in there and he has a lot of memory.”
