Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper could be seen bursting into tears after he awoke from his coma in new clips for her documentary, Finding Derek.
The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter appeared on the ITV news show to be interviewed herself for a change by co-stars and friends Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid.
Kate has been busy documenting her hubby’s battle against coronavirus which he contracted last March.
In March 2020, Derek was rushed to hospital and not long after was put into a medically-induced coma, which he stayed in for months.
Sharing the moment they first saw each other on Facetime after Derek opened his eyes, he burst into tears the minute his wife came on the call.
Laying in his hospital bed, Derek became overcome with emotions as Kate’s face came on the greet him.
Talking to her husband for the first few times in months, she said: “He’s back. We’ve been waiting a long time to speak to you. I’m so proud of you. I’m so proud of you.”
After catching the virus, Derek has been left with liver, kidney and heart failure following the toll it took on his internal organs.
The show is said to give an “unflinching account” of her husband’s horrific fight over the last 12 months.
Kate said he is “trapped in the middle ground” as he can sometimes talk before slipping out of consciousness.
Speaking on The One Show last week, she said: “One of the things I’m here to talk about is the documentary and what you will see is that this time last year, I was, like a lot of us, wondering what was coming our way.”

Kate continued: “I was fearing the worst, on air reading headlines about the earliest cases of people contracting coronavirus and then I suddenly found myself right in the middle of it.
“And I’d say there was weeks and months of living minute by minute, wondering if I was going to get the call to say whether he lived or died.”
Kate went on to say he can sometimes talk or say words.
Finding Derek airs on Tuesday, March 23, on ITV at 9pm.
