Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has been seen with her husband Derek as she took him and their two kids Darcey and Billy out of their home in London at Christmas.
This comes after she updated her fans as she described being able to spend Christmas with her husband for the first time since he fell seriously ill as “the biggest gift”.
The family enjoyed a trip to watch Cinderella at Richmond Theatre in West London, which marks the first time Derek been seen outside since contracting Covid in March 2020, which caused him to be placed into a medically induced coma and become the UK’s longest Covid sufferer in hospital.
Though visibly still weak and poorly from the devastating effects of the virus, former political adviser Derek was pictured in a wheelchair, managing to raise a smile after the family trip to the pantomime.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain on December 24, she said there was still a “long, long way to go” in his recovery, but added she felt grateful to have him home this festive period.
The TV presenter, 54, said thankfully though, a visit from a nurse/carer had “sorted” the unspecified medical problem allowing former political adviser Derek to remain at home with the family for the entire Christmas period.
Derek 54, spent last December in hospital and was gravely ill after contracting coronavirus in early 2020, a journey which TV presenter Ms Garraway spoke openly about in the documentary Finding Derek earlier this year.
Yesterday, alongside a picture of her children, Darcey and Billy, with their dad on the Christmas home visit, Kate shared a moving update with her followers.
She wrote in her post: “So the last 24 hours has been bumpy – a scare that meant Derek might have had to go back into hospital ( thankfully sorted by a visit from nurse/carer) , he has also had one of his ultra fatigue days so has been too weak to do much other than sleep.
“I burnt the parsnips ( Darceys favourite ) & got the “wrong” Lego for Billy.
“But now snuggled up around Dad’s bed watching £nativity everything feels suddenly perfect. Feel so grateful to have the chance to be together.
“Sending love & hoping you have found some joy today whatever your circumstances – “merry christmas all!”.
Kate also opened up about Derek’s progress on Good Morning Britain this week, revealing the sweet moment Derek joined in with one of their family jokes.
She said: “We were playing a silly game, one of those moral question games…and they asked ‘Who is likely to find money on the floor and keep it?’ and everyone in the room said all at the same time ‘Darcy,’ and he started to laugh.
“And honestly, it was just the most lovely moment because you thought he does get it, he does understand. And he’s right! Because she is the most likely!”
