Kate Garraway’s husband Derek ‘struggling to speak or move properly’ after Covid

Kate Garraway’s husband, Derek, is still reportedly “struggling to move or talk properly” after a long battle with Covid despite being allowed back home Wednesday.

A family friend told the Sun: “Derek is by no means entirely out the woods yet, and is still struggling to move or talk properly.

“The great fear is that he will have to return to hospital, but by raising his spirits, in conjunction with his ongoing medical support, the hope is he can make progress at home.

“Derek has a long and gruelling battle ahead.”

He is understood to be sleeping downstairs in a hospital bed and will use a makeshift wet room for showering.

He will have round the clock care as he works to battle the awful effects of the virus.

“Kate has been dreaming of this day for so long, and she can’t thank the wonderful NHS staff enough,” said the friend.

“They have all been magnificent to get Derek to this point.

“He still has a very long way to go, and medically they’re taking this a day at a time under strict medical supervision.”

Former political spin doctor-turned-psychologist Derek has been confirmed as Britain’s longest-surviving Covid hospital patient.

Despite no longer having Covid, the Good Morning Britain presenter has revealed that his body has been ravaged by the virus.

He has been “universally affected” meaning that his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas have all been damaged by Covid.

At his worst point, doctors feared he would never fully recover and would be in a semi-vegetive state forever.

Kate invited cameras into the family home to document their experience and reveal home renovations in the ITV documentary Finding Derek.

The extensive changes revolved around implementing ground-floor living for when he came back home.

Medical teams have now released Derek in the hope that being surrounded by his friends and family will help raise his spirits and that will in turn give his physical health a boost.

The Daily Star has approached Kate’s representatives for comment.
