Katherine Ryan's new dating show attracts Ofcom complaints before it even airs

Viewers have complained to TV watchdog Ofcom about Katherine Ryan’s new dating game show before it has even been broadcast – because they say it will humiliate women.

The comedian’s new ITV2 show Ready to Mingle follows the journey of a single woman trying to find her ideal partner from 12 men battling to impress her.

However, not all the contestants will be single. Some will be guided by their real-life partners to try and win a big cash prize.

The programme will not be screened until the autumn but just the synopsis has incensed viewers.

One tweeted: “How on earth did this show get commissioned? So we get to watch a woman fall for someone who isn’t single. That’s messed up enough IRL – shocking to turn it into entertainment. @ITV should be ashamed of themselves.”

Another wrote: “Hello @Ofcom can we complain about this before it’s aired? What a horrible and damaging idea for a show.”

A third messaged: “So we get to watch some woman get lied to right up until the point she’s humiliated? Or maybe it’ll end *well* and he’ll break up with the woman he’s been pretending to cheat on for the new one? This is an abusive mess.”

“Really?” asked another. “How is this good for anyone? You are literally encouraging people hurting other people. No. You can do better ITV.”

Host Katherine, 37, has said of the venture: “I am so excited to be a part of this new dating game show. How could I say no?

“It’s like nothing we’ve seen before but still with all the drama and dating dilemmas we love to see, and I’ll be there front row as it all unfolds!”

Neither Ofcom nor ITV has responded to requests for comment on Wednesday.

Potato, part of ITV Studios, will be bringing the project to life. Managing director Michael Kelpie teased the premise of the show saying: “You’re single. You’re on a date. You’re having a great time. Your date is ticking all your boxes. This could be the one, but… is he single?

“Ready to Mingle is a cheeky, playful dating game show and with a big money prize up for grabs, anything can happen.

“Katherine’s undeniable comedic charm and quick-wit make her the perfect host for this new format and we’re thrilled she is involved.”
