Kerry Katona says her earliest memory is her mum self-harming in tragic confession

Kerry Katona has reflected on her turbulent childhood that saw her go through the care system, as well as eight schools before finding fame.

The former singer, from Warrington, Cheshire, has never shied away from discussing her troubled upbringing and has proudly addressed how “far” she has come.

Now, Kerry, 40, has opened up about her earliest memory that has since lodged itself inside her brain, despite more than three decades passing since the traumatic incident.

The star, who found fame in Atomic Kitten, has previously discussed her mum Sue’s battle with depression and drug use which saw her taken into care at a young age.

In her most candid confession, Kerry revealed in her New magazine column that seeing Sue self-harm will never leave her.

“My earliest memory is watching my mum slit her wrists,” she wrote.

Kerry continued: “I was three, she was manic-depressive and self-harmed until I was 15.”

While some may wish to block this memory out, the former I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! campmate revealed that she wouldn’t change anything, explaining: “That’s just the way life is.

“I’ve come so far from being a foster kid growing up in a council house.”

Going into further detail, she added: “Everything I’ve been through, I don’t regret one thing – not the drugs, the marriages, the bankruptcy, it’s all put me where I am today.”

Before going on to top the charts with former bandmates Liz McClarnon and Natasha Hamilton, Kerry’s life was far less glamourous.

The Whole Again songstress previously admitted that she was forced to steal food as a youngster due to having none in the family home as her mum didn’t have enough money.

“I used to shoplift all the time as a kid,” she told The Mirror.

Kerry added: “When I was living with my mum, she would go out on benders for three days and there would be no food, I was only about nine.”

The singer found herself entering the care system aged just 13, staying with foster parents Margaret and Fred Woodall, with Kerry describing Margaret as “one of the most important people in my life”.

Kerry, who is currently appearing on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, reflected on her abusive relationship with her ex-husband, George Kay.

Reflecting on his death, through tears, Kerry said: “How f***ing dare you die, putting the kids through all that s**t and then you just die!”

She went on to add: “The worst conversation I’ve ever had was having to tell my five-year-old her daddy died. Having to explain that to a baby, and as big of a t*** he was, he was still her dad.”

George, who died aged 39 in 2019 after “eating a ball of cocaine” was father to Kerry’s daughter, Dylan-Jorge, known as DJ.
