Love Island’s Amber Gill has stepped up to defend her pal and host of the dating show she rose to fame on, arguing that she is a “good host”.
During this year’s Love Island coverage, Laura Whitmore came under fire by fans for her “awkward” hosting techniques but Amber defended her position.
The 24-year-old said: “She’s a good host. It’s about it being a very funny show it’s under the dynamics of the cast and characters and what’s playing out at the time.”
She was then asked for her opinion on the front-runners in the lineup to possibly replace Laura, which are Maya Jama and former contestant Maura Higgins.
Amber added: “Well, I even heard someone say I should come in. People say that you know – I’ve heard it.”
When asked if she’d be up for the huge role, she replied: “No way… You know what, I’ve done a bit of hosting but I’m not on that level.
I think that Laura does a good job, but I think me and Maura are on the same playing field, so I think Maura should leave it to the professionals.
“If it was Maya Jama I’d be happy.”
Maya and Maura have become the firm fan-favourites to replace Laura but ITV have backed their decision to keep the Irish host on the show despite a “lukewarm” reception from fans.
It comes after a source claimed to The Sun that producers were eyeing up Maya or Maura to take over her role for the new summer season.
A source told the publication: “Producers are keen to keep the show fresh and are keeping their options open.
“They have been impressed with both Maya and Maura, and think either could bring the necessary pizzazz and sexiness to the role.”
The source added: “They want someone who is fun and can connect with people”, adding that as Maura had seen villa life from the inside, it would be easy for her to “relate” to contestants.
However, ITV has denied the claims, telling Daily Star: “This is untrue.
“Laura has done a fantastic job at the helm of the show this year and no discussions have yet taken place with regards to the next series.”
