Line of Duty fans predict series 7 after facing unanswered Carmichael questions

Line of Duty viewers are hopeful BBC One will release a seventh season of the hit show, after watching the nail-biting series six finale play out.

The identity of the mysterious H was unveiled after years of anticipation, with DCI Ian Buckells exposed as the man behind the link to the OCG.

However, watching from home, a number of viewers weren’t satisfied Patricia Carmichael’s storyline – the detective chief inspector who is Ted Hastings’ arch enemy – was properly addressed.

Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin) has left a number of fans wondering whether she is crooked, thanks to her vendetta against Ted (Adrian Dunbar) and determination to force him into early retirement.

Taking to Twitter in the closing moments of the show, Line of Duty fans speculated over whether the show would return for another series.

Line of Duty fans are convinced there is more to Carmichael’s story

One wrote: “There is still storylines for Series 7 though if it happens – who is Buckles covering for and has Carmichael been involved in corruption that Hastings, Kate and Steve can prove to bring her down so Ted can take over again #LineOfDuty.”

“Of course Buckles is not H. Wait for series 7. Carmichael and Osborne are crooked AF! #LineofDuty,” added a second.

And a third weighed in: “So we all know right that Ted has just laid a trap for #Carmichael bring on series 7 #LineOfDuty.”

“Eeek I was soo excited for the finale but feel a tad underwhelmed by the unmasking of “H” Even Carmichael didn’t have any oomph in tonight’s episode! Hoping for a season 7 now….” wrote a fourth.

Martin Compston, who plays DS Steve Arnott, previously discussed whether there was room for another series, admitting the show’s writer Jed Mercurio would confirm his plans in a few months time.

Speaking on the BBC’s The Afternoon Show podcast, he revealed: “The genuine answer is we don’t know, but that’s nothing different.

“Every series, Jed takes a couple of months off after it and there’s stuff that’s way above my pay grade in terms of the data and analytics that comes in.

“There’s all this stuff now with 28-day figures because you’ve got streaming and so on. He likes to sit down in the cold light of day, take the emotion out of it and look at it then.

“I will say for sure that we won’t come back just for the sake of it. We’ll only come back if he believes there’s a story to be told and there’s more legs in it,” he added.

“There’s also a question now of legacy. You know, if it does wrap up, great, do you want to go out with a bang?

“But all that stuff will come into play and I’d say in a couple of months time we’ll take a decision.”

Kate Fleming actress Vicky McClure similarly addressed the show’s explosive finale, taking to Instagram to thank her co-stars for their friendship behind the scenes.

She said: “Please excuse the slightly over emotional post but it’s been quite a surreal time! The audience support has been unreal, the creativity of merchandise, the artwork, ground breaking viewing figures and the hype!!

“It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to be a part of Line of Duty, not just because of the success of the show but the life long friendships we’ve all gained.”

“Now…lets wrap tHis up … Xxx,” she finished, hinting things were coming to an official end.
