Line of Duty actor Martin Compston has admitted he’s “on board” with a particularly wild fan theory about the iconic BBC police drama.
Martin, who plays Steve Arnott in the show, was grilled by Jonathan Ross on his chat show on Saturday night.
Jonathan confronted both Martin and his co-star Vicky McClure, who plays Kate Fleming, about several of his favourite fan theories to emerge about the series.
And Martin was definitely eager for one of them to be true.
“Steve has been in a coma since he fell down the stairs in series four and everything since then has been a dream,” Jonathan suggested, while fellow guests Diversity dancer Ashley Banjo and Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds watched keenly for physical tells.
“That would make you the most important person in the show!” Jonathan pointed out, as Martin chimed in: “I’m on board with that!”
Vicky also shared her opinions on a slightly more down-to-earth theory, pertaining to Patricia Carmichael tapping her pen four times while she was interviewing Jo Davidson.
“That’s very interesting, yeah,” she said with a raised eyebrow. “Very, very interesting.”
Other theories included the idea that Ted Hastings could be a ghost who only Steve and Kate can see.
Wossy added: “Well, he’s got white hair and he looks a bit spectral!”
“As opposed to Sixth Sense – that one’s no sense,” Martin giggled.
Jonathan also grilled them about a particularly pervasive theory that during an interview with Jimmy Lakewell, who allegedly gave a hint to H’s true identity with the line: “Look beyond the race claim to find H.”
Fans were convinced it was a major clue, as if you take the letters that make up ‘race claim’ and unscramble them, you reveal one character’s name – Carmichael – minus one letter.
H.

But it has since emerged that the line never actually appeared in the show, with Martin laughing: “”Do you know what I love about that one?
“It’s so spot on, but that line never got said… blew my mind. Jed [Mercurio] said, ‘No, that line never happened.'”
Martin also giggled his way through a crazy claim that Ted could actually be Steve’s father, laughing: “It’s not Star Wars!”
He did admit that some fan theories were “actually pretty close” – leaving viewers desperate to find out which he meant.
He and Vicky agreed that the storyline would reach the end of its “natural arc” during the series six finale, which airs on Sunday.
But fans were more distracted by Martin’s natural Scottish accent, after being used to him putting on an English one for the cop show.
“Why is Steve putting on a Scottish accent?” one asked on Twitter, accompanied by cry-laughing emojis.
Another wrote: “I was today years old when I found out that @martin_compston was Scottish!”
While someone else said: “Just got the Jonathan Ross Show on, I had no clue that the guy that plays Steve Arnott was Scottish.”
