Line of Duty star Martin Compston has broken his silence after fans were left disheartened with the ending of Sunday’s finale.
The 36-year-old seemed to sympathise with viewers who were less than impressed with the grand reveal.
In a post shared to Instagram, the star better known for his role as Detective Inspector Steve Arnott, told his following that he “fully understood” the backlash.
The suspense had mounted throughout series six, with fans desperate to figure out the identity of the corrupt member of the OCG known as H.
It was revealed that Ian Buckells, played by actor Nigel Boyle, was the person behind H.
He gave a series of “no comment” responses while in the interrogation room, before he finally cracked under the pressure, explaining that he was the go-between for the police and OCG, orchestrating a number of murders.
Viewers of the show were outraged and took to social media in their masses to rubbish the ending of the BBC programme.
After floods of comments and memes had circulated on Twitter and Instagram, Martin spoke out.
He began: “Hey folks now the madness has slightly died down just want to thank everyone who reached out about last night and the series as a whole, we’ve been blown away by the reaction and love for the show.
“Fully understand it wasn’t the ‘urgent exit’ type ending many were hoping for but we really appreciate you sticking with us.”
Martin added: “Felt many emotions last few days from the excitement and anxiety of the hype to the relief that it’s over.
“Right now I just feel immense pride our show that started on BBC2 Wednesday nights has just smashed every overnight drama record since they began.”
The actor also reminded online users of a previous bet which saw him and his co-stars Vicky McClure, Adrian Dunbar and the show’s creator Jed Mercurio all agree to have matching inkings if the show made records.
Line of Duty’s last episode received its highest-ever overnight ratings of 12.8million, which amounted to 56.2% of the audience share.
Having reached the 12million target, Martin wanted to remind his colleagues about the former agreement.
He finished: “Finally myself, Vicky, Adrian and Jed made an agreement on the inconceivable and ridiculous scenario we ever got twelve million viewers we would get ‘AC12million’ tattoos.
“We’ll see who is good to their word….”
