There wasn’t a dry eye in the house on Monday morning when Lorraine Kelly hosted an emotional reunion between two stars of Long Lost Family.
A mother and daughter who had been apart for 50 years finally found one another thanks to Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell of Long Lost Family, with their episode airing on Monday evening.
Receiving a TV Bafta this year, Long Lost Family – which premiered in 2011 – sees family members who have spent a lifetime apart reunite.
Daughter Lisa Phillips was adopted five decades ago and grew up wondering who her birth mother could be.
Thankfully, the researchers at ITV tracked her biological mother, Susan Atkins, down, with their pair enjoying a tearful reunion before the cameras.
Lisa grew teary-eyed again on Monday morning as she watched the footage back, expressing the love she feels for her long-lost mum.
A young single mum at the time, Susan had given Lisa up for adoption because she believed she couldn’t give her the quality of life she deserved.
Lisa grew up with doting adoptive parents, Sonia and Gerald Clark, who told her she was adopted when she was a child.
Though the 51-year-old enjoyed a happy upbringing, when her wedding day came around in 1992, she realised she wanted to connect with her birth mother.
Almost three decades later, and Lisa and Susan have finally reunited, inviting one another into their lives and getting to know their extended families.
The mother and daughter expressed their love for one another on the show, leaving host Lorraine visibly moved.
“I know this is so emotional,” Lorraine said, as Lisa wiped away her tears.
Lisa replied: “I’m pathetic, honestly. You’ll have to excuse me.”
Lorraine comforted her, saying: “Don’t you worry at all! You had a really happy childhood with your mum and dad, and you knew you were adopted from a young age, but you always had this thing – you wanted to find your birth mum.”
Rob Rinder, who was the next guest on the show, similarly had his heartstrings tugged, as he exclaimed: “I’m so moved by that last piece!”
Likely to move many more viewers, Lisa and Susan’s incredible story has been documented on Long Lost Family, which airs on Monday, on ITV at 9pm.
Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV.
