Love Island bosses 'relieved' as viewing figures skyrocket now Euro 2020 is over

Love Island is scoring big ratings now Euro 2020 is over.

The show suffered a drop in popularity during the tournament, with fewer than a million fans tuning in for some episodes.

It was watched by just 550,000 people last Sunday when it clashed with England taking on Italy in the final.

But since then viewing figures have skyrocketed to make it one of the biggest shows on the box.

On two nights last week, the ITV2 series beat every other channel in its slot.

Tuesday’s episode outdid all competing programmes including new ITV series Cooking With The Stars. And on Thursday it was more popular than a documentary about Princess Diana on ITV and one on the NHS on BBC One.

Love Island’s bosses are said to be “relieved” ratings have gone up.

An insider told us: “The viewing figures during the Euros weren’t great. They were significantly lower than during previous series. But since the football has finished, things have really picked up again.

“The show is now regularly beating BBC and ITV, which is unheard of for a show on a digital channel.”

Bosses are hoping ratings will go even higher when they open second villa Casa Amor later in the series.

The twist, which usually boosts interest, sees the boys and girls forced apart.

Producers send new contestants to see if any of the original line-up can be tempted to stray from their partners.

The insider added: “Casa Amor always causes plenty of drama. Everyone is hoping it will give ratings a shot in the arm and send them even higher.”

One of the Love Island ladies will be sent packing their bags as a shock recoupling hits the villa in Friday night’s episode.

This year’s series of the ITV2 dating show has already delivered some explosive moments and Love Island bosses have proved they’re not afraid to eject Islanders from the show with little to no warning – like when Shannon Singh was kicked out after only two days.

Earlier this week, Brad McClelland and Lucinda Strafford were also hit by a nightmare decision of choosing who would go home between the two after getting the least votes from members of the public – suggesting they were the “least compatible” couple.

Who will be the next contestant to be given the boot from the island?

Love Island airs nightly on ITV2 and ITVHub at 9pm
