Love Island most complained about moments to Ofcom including Dani Dyer's misery

Love Island is full of fiery moments, so it’s no surprise the show has received its fair share of complaints over the years.

From explosive rows, unexpected hookups and the always dramatic coupling up ceremonies there’s a lot of juicy incidents.

The show’s bosses know how much we love the drama and always throw in new twists to stir the pot further.

However some of these have been viewed as going too far and coupled with the behaviour of several contestants having led to a number complaints to Ofcom.

In total, the most controversial moments of the series have added up to a whopping 8,485 complaints over the last five years.

As part of their Most Missed TV Moments campaign, the broadband and TV experts at Uswitch have crunched Ofcom’s complaints data to reveal the most outrageous moments from the show.

6. Post-Casa Amor fallout – July 2019, 314 complaints

With over 300 complaints the post-Casa Amor fallout in 2019 was certainly controversial.

It raised complaints from viewers for not just one but two shock moments from the episode after Amy and Amber both chose to stick by their men, only to find that Curtis and Michael had tried to pursue relationships with other girls in Casa Amor.

The incident led to the famous breakup between Amy and boyfriend Curtis as she tearfully admitted she was preparing to tell him she loved him after he revealed he had tried to couple up with Jourdan.

Fans came out in droves to complain against the show, concerned about Amber and Amy’s mental well-being and welfare.

5. Fake news headline of Paige and Finn – January 2020, 544 complaints

The most recent series of Love Island saw a few controversial incidents, but it was the infamous headlines game that ruffled the most feathers.

The headline reported that Finn’s head had been turned in Casa Amor by stunner Natalia, however viewers knew that Finn had stayed loyal to Paige the whole time, even sleeping outside on the day bed.

But the game understandably caused Paige to have some doubts, saying: “There’s cameras and people watching.”

The choice of headline caused viewers to accuse the show of deliberately misleading Paige, and trying to break the couple up.

4. Georgia Steele and Jack Fowler’s kiss – June 2018, 655 complaints

Fourth on the list with 655 was the infamous kiss between Georgia and Jack.

While the kiss was hotly contested on the show as to who initiated it, it was actually newcomer Idris lying that it was Jack which had fans upset.

Viewers became very concerned about Laura Anderson who was coupled up with Jack, worrying that her mental health could be affected by the lie.

Finally after several days the situation was cleared up by new Islander Kieran who revealed it was in fact Georgia who initiated the kiss.

3. Maura Higgins’ advances towards Tommy Fury – June 2019, 709 complaints

Racking up over 700 complaints from fans was Maura’s unwanted advances towards Tommy.

In particular, one scene were Maura straddled the boxer and attempted to kiss him as he turned his head away sparked fury from viewers.

Fans were quick to say that they had felt uncomfortable watching it play out and some went as far to say it was sexual harassment.

2. Joe’s behaviour towards Lucie – June 2019, 500+ complaints

Coming in at second place was the relationship between Joe Garratt and Lucie Donlan, most notably when he said he was worried she wasn’t spending enough time with the other female islanders, rather than Tommy Fury.

Fans slammed Joe as “controlling” and became angered by what they perceived as “gaslighting” behaviour.

The moment even prompted the co-chief executive of Women’s Aid, Adina Claire to speak out, saying: “Controlling behaviour is never acceptable, and with Love Island viewers complaining to Ofcom in record numbers about Joe’s possessive behaviour towards Lucie, more people are becoming aware of this and want to challenge it.”

The incident reportedly triggered over 500 complaints alone with many fans becoming increasingly concerned about Lucie’s welfare.

1. Dani Dyer seeing Jack Fincham’s reaction to his ex entering Casa Amor – July 2018, 2,525 complaints

The number one moment that became the focus of fans’ ire was in series four, when Dani was shown video of Jack seeing his ex entering Casa Amor.

The revelation caused Dani to become visibly distressed and she was left crying and declaring: “I just knew it was too good to be true.”

Reports revealed that a whopping 2,500 complaints were made specifically about that moment, with fans labelling the clip as misleading as Jack stayed faithful to Dani throughout his time in Casa Amor, even sleeping outside so as not to share with any of the new girls.

Viewers were furious at the show for causing deliberate drama without taking account of Dani’s mental health, something that the show has been heavily criticised for over the years.
