Love Island star Demi Jones devastatingly revealed she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this year after finding a concerning lump in her neck.
The 23-year-old star made the heartbreaking announcement on her Instagram Stories in May, with a picture of her holding a leaflet with the title “Understanding Thyroid Cancer”.
The Daily Star exclusively caught up with Demi to see how she is coping with the treatment and to find out how she is recovering from the news.
She said: “I have recently had more cancer treatment so that’s all good we are waiting months down to see if it’s all come out of my body so I have to have a full-body scan. But I’m in good spirits.
“I’ve put on a few pounds though as I’ve been eating plenty of chocolate to comfort me.”
Demi also touched upon how important it has been for her to influence so many young girls lives by sharing her story.
She continued: “I would just be going to Tesco’s and I’ve got girls coming up to me and saying ‘I’ve found a lump because of you or I’m going to the doctors because of you’.
“Every day I wake up and people are sending me paragraphs on how I’ve saved their lives. My mum even said to me ‘Demi think you could have saved someone’s life by doing this’.
“I think most women can see it is relatable if they’ve got cancer,” she continued before sharing how “awful” it was for Sarah Harding before her tragic death.
“I just try to get girls to take five mins off and just have a moment to check.”
The influencer also revealed that it can sometimes hit her hard despite trying her best to remain positive throughout her journey.
She added: “It’s like a domino effect everyone around you if affected – it’s one in two now but positivity is the best medicine.
“It’s hard though sometimes drinking with the girls and I’ll have a few too many wines and people will come up to talk about it and like ‘ah yeah, I’m with the girls and now I feel emotional.'”
The former dating show contestant went on to reveal that fellow Islander Shaughna Phillips has been bang on when it comes to supporting her.
Demi said: “Influencer wise Shaughna has been amazing and we did some things for Cancer Research UK cos she lost her dad and now my dad is terminally ill with cancer as well.
She also revealed that is working on an “exciting new TV project” that will relate to her cancer struggles and will be her first project since Love Island.
