Maura Higgins didn’t have a period for four months after her weight loss began to affect her menstrual cycle.
The former Love Island star, 30, realised she needed to eat more to help her body to return to a healthy state, having lost weight due to intense exercise.
Maura explained her mum and her boyfriend Chris Taylor advised her to relax the intense training regime after noticing the worrying effect it was having on her health.
During an interview with the Daily Mail, the Irish reality star, who appeared on Love Island in 2019, admitted the weight loss left her concerned about her fertility.
“It got to a stage where it was actually affecting my periods; I lost my period for four months,” she told the publication.
“Especially at my age, it’s obviously not good. I want to have kids someday so I know that’s just not a good thing to happen.”
Excessive or sudden weight loss can lead periods to stop, according to the NHS, as it can stop the production of hormones needed for ovulation.
Maura went on: “I remember even Chris was saying to me ‘Maura, that’s just not good, we need to sort this out’ I was like ‘yeah, I know’.
“When you have good people around you, mammy as well, she noticed, she said ‘you’ve got too thin’ or whatever and I was like ‘yeah, yeah, yeah I know, I’m trying to sort it out’.”
Thankfully, Maura has since found a healthier approach to her fitness and nutrition, telling the publication she is now “feeling so much better”.
Maura and Chris went public with their relationship last November, following great speculation over a potential budding romance.
The reality stars, who met on Love Island but paired up with different partners, maintained a great friendship after leaving the villa and were often pictured together on social media.
“Turns out I fell in love with my best mate,” Chris said, confirming their relationship during a trip to Dubai last year.
Sharing another snap from the holiday, which was booked to celebrate her 30th birthday, Maura added: “He’s mine.”
