Martin Compston reunites with Line of Duty creators for thrilling new BBC series

Martin Compston is set to rejoin the Line of Duty creators for a thrilling new BBC drama, with the trailer officially released on Sunday.

Martin, who plays Steve Arnott in the hit cop show, will appear among the star-studded cast of the new show, which focuses on the disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler.

It comes from World Productions, the team behind Line of Duty.

DCI Amy Silva, played by Suranne Jones, and DS Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) are tasked with investigating a conspiracy at sea following a death on the submarine HMS Vigil and the boat’s disappearance.

The police will be brought into close contact with the Navy and British security service, leading to some tense clashes as they investigate the country’s nuclear deterrent.

In a trailer aired after the Line of Duty finale on Sunday night, a news reporter breaks the story of a sailor found dead on the HMS Vigil.

“We’re to send a detective out to look into it,” a man tells Amy.

“Me?” she asks, and gets the response: “Yes, it’s perfectly safe.”

“How are you with confined spaces?” she’s then grilled by her fellow officer, portrayed by Lolita Chakrabarti.

“No problem,” she insists with a laugh.

Interspersed with shots of DCI Silva being airlifted out to the submarine, and then clambering down into the depths, the tension is clearly already mounting by the time Martin finally appears on-screen.

But it doesn’t look like he’ll be playing anything close to the white knight Steve Arnott this time, as he says gruffly in his natural Scottish accent: “There’s 20 different ways you could kill Vigil’s crew single-handed.”

Martin posted a teaser on his own Instagram page, looking very dapper in a Royal Navy uniform and wearing a chunky set of headphones, with a name-tag that reads Burke.

“Led by the brilliant @suranne_jones and from the makers of Line of Duty. Coming soon to BBC 1 #VIGIL” he wrote alongside the snap.

The trailer closes with the line: “The deeper you go, the darker it gets” as the submarine hatch closes above Amy.

If the tense trailer is anything to go by, the gripping new drama could be just as captivating as the goings-on at AC-12.

Suranne, who plays Amy, said: “Tom Edge has created a thrill of a story, set in a world I knew nothing about. […] Amy Silva is a brilliantly complex character, thrown into a highly charged situation where her authority is weakened.

“We watch as she navigates her own personal trauma and loss, all at a time when she’s questioning her relationships and life choices.”

Show writer Tom Edge added: “The ‘Continuous At Sea Deterrent’, better known as ‘Trident’, has been a contentious part of national life for half a century now, a stock of nuclear missiles kept hundreds of feet below the sea surface. But this world has rarely been explored on screen.

“I can’t wait to take a BBC One audience down with us, into the pitch-black icy waters of the unseen Atlantic, where tomorrow’s geopolitical struggles are already being played out.”

Its cast includes Adam James, who starred in I May Destroy You as Julian; Endeavour star Shaun Evans and Noughts and Crosses’ Paterson Joseph.

Vigil will air later in the year in six parts on BBC One
