Martin Compston says Line of Duty was nearly thrown into chaos after weight gain

Line of Duty star Martin Compston put on so much weight during lockdown he couldn’t fit into his trademark waistcoats.

Filming on the hit drama was suspended last spring when coronavirus hit, seeing Martin going home and overindulging.

After returning to the home he shares with wife Tianna Flynn in Las Vegas, Martin, 36, enjoyed plenty of comfort food.

And when filming resumed, he was too big for his suits.

Martin said: “I couldn’t get into them — the suits, the waistcoats, the shirts. It was horrible. I knew I’d have to lose a bit, but I’d been enjoying lockdown. I’d been doing weights, so I’d totally changed shape.”

Martin’s weight gain was a major problem for the show because producers needed him to look the same so he could finish filming the series.

He said: “We were hopping back into scenes we’d already filmed. There’s a scene outside the police station where I’m talking to Adrian Dunbar and then I walk round the corner.

“We filmed the second part seven months after the first.”

Martin started a health kick to avoid throwing the show into chaos.

He followed a strict diet for two weeks while in quarantine when he returned to the UK.

And bosses installed an exercise bike so he could burn plenty of calories.

Martin said: “That viewers will not notice the join is down to some serious last-minute dieting. I thought quarantine would be Domino’s pizza and wine, but it was exercise, soup and water for two weeks.”

Line of Duty is back next Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
