Martin Lewis defends decision not to wear tie on GMB after breaking major rule

Martin Lewis was interrogated for his decision of not wearing a tie on his Good Morning Britain debut on Monday, despite being asked by producers to do so.

Co-star Susanna Reid jumped in while introducing Martin to the viewers and questioned his choice of attire, judging him for not wearing a tie.

Welcoming her new temporary co-host to the show, she jokingly jibed whether his recent tooth surgery “prevented him from wearing a tie”.

The money-saving expert joined familiar face, Susanna, on Monday’s show wearing a black blazer with a white shirt.

Martin said: “Wow, two minutes in she’s already started.

“The tie thing is interesting because the bosses said, ‘Are you gonna wear a tie, it’s part of our format to wear a tie?’

“I’m not disrespectful of the programme’s structure, I was on it for 15 years. Because I talk about money I’ve always had a deliberate thing, I won’t wear a tie because it appears corporate and when you’re talking money, I want people to understand I’m not on the corporate side I’m on the other side.”

Susanna gave him a side-eye look and smug smirking expression.

“Don’t pull a face at me,” he quipped to Susanna.

“Therefore I feel smart is good but I’m not gonna wear a tie.”

After he laughed about his “greying chest wig” he declared that the show would run a social poll about whether or not he needs a tie.

He said: “Viewers are the ultimate arbiter of this so I’ve agreed that I won’t wear a tie on the first day, we’re gonna do a poll on Twitter asking whether you think I need to wear a tie.

“I feel more comfortable without but if you say wear a tie from tomorrow I will put a tie on.”

Not to let things slide, Susanna responded: “So when the bosses say wear a tie you say no, but when the viewers say wear a tie, they’re the important ones.”

The 49-year-old said he would agree to change his attire for future programmes if his “actual bosses” – the viewers – wanted him to do so.

Later in the programme, to Susanna’s dismay, they revealed that over 80% of fans who voted in the poll thought Martin shouldn’t have to wear a tie.

Guest on Monday’s show and singer Tony Hadley jumped in to defend Martin and said that “you don’t need a tie” when first speaking to the presenter pair.

He also concluded his segment on the programme by saying: “Good to see you, you look good without the tie!”

Before coming on the show, Martin shared with fans that he wasn’t set on becoming Susanna’s “right-hand man” permanently as he has other key commitments.

He also told his Twitter followers that it’s also due to the fact he doesn’t fancy the early starts either.
