Gogglebox star Mary Cook has died at the age of 92, a statement from Channel 4 and Studio Lambert on behalf of the Cook family said.
The statement read: “We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.
“Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend to many, Mary, who worked in the hospitality trade, had been married and widowed twice.
“She will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.
“Our love and thoughts are with Mary’s family, friends, and Marina. The family have asked for privacy at this sad time.”
She and Marina, who lived with her in the St Monica Trust retirement home, won over fans with their hilarious quips and rude sex talk during the biggest shows of the week.
They had taken a temporary break from filming the series due to the Covid pandemic, but returned in the series finale of the 17th series of the hit Channel 4 show.
The pair were discovered by a researcher for Gogglebox during a trip to Asda, with their website stating that Mary said: “I was going shopping, so I asked them if they could wait until we got back.
“They came up to Marina’s flat, held cards up of different famous people and we had to talk about them.”
Mary is the second beloved Gogglebox star to die in two months, with Pete McGarry passing away after a short battle with bowel cancer in June.
His wife Linda, who starred with him on the show alongside her son George, revealed that he had been diagnosed earlier in the year but was told he had only six months to live.
Despite an operation to remove the tumour, Pete died only days after the diagnosis. at the age of 71.
Linda told The Sun at the time: “Pete was a lovely man and I was so lucky to have him for 25 years.
“I said to him, ‘we’ve not only been 25 years, it’s been day and night with each other.’ He was my life.”
Meanwhile, devastated fans have rushed to social media to pay tribute to Mary.
One posted: “So sad to hear Mary Cook from Gogglebox has passed away. An absolute TV icon and a national treasure as far as I’m concerned – constant telly gold. Won’t be the same without her.”
Another added: “Well this is incredibly sad news. Mary was a legend and someone you knew was having a BALL doing the show.”
A third agreed: “So sorry to hear this sad news. What a lovely lady and what a great pairing with Marina on Gogglebox – two very cheeky girls! Deepest sympathy to Mary’s family.”
Gogglebox returns in September at 9pm on Channel 4.
