Masterchef judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode admit they aren't close friends

Masterchef judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace have admitted they aren’t close pals away from the cameras.

Despite being a perfect TV duo on the famous BBC cooking show, they don’t socialise together when they aren’t filming and they even admit there’s sometimes “tension” between them.

It comes ahead of the return of Celebrity Masterchef, which will air on Monday at 9pm with a new line-up of celebrity cooks hoping to impress the two judges.

John said: “We’ve known each other for 30 years, but we lead separate lives.

“At no stage have we morphed into each other, which means there’s always going to be a little frisson here and there.”

John reckons the fact that they are not that close makes Master-Chef better telly.

He said: “It’s no bad thing – there’s an energy with that tension, which is useful. We never know for sure what the other will think about a dish.”

He added: “Because we are not scripted in any way, anything can and does happen.

“Five contestants walk into the kitchen bringing their own energy and we have to respond on the spot.

“It’s a compliment to Gregg and I that we continue to work so well together.”

The pair are back with a new series of Celebrity MasterChef on Monday at 9pm on BBC One.

This series will feature a whole host of celebrity guests including Su Pollard, Joe Swash, Katie Price, and Penny Lancaster.

It also comes as Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York, even hinted that she’d be interested in taking part in a future series of the show after speaking to Penny on The One Show on Monday night.
