MasterChef's Gregg Wallace 'wanted to die' as his boozing got out of control

MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace has opened up on his booze-filled past and admitted at his lowest points he was out of control.

Speaking to OK! Magazine as part of their Dry January campaign, Gregg opened up on how he overcame alcohol addiction and how he now manages his drinking.

He revealed to the publication how he would start his day drinking before lunch with a “couple of pints”.

Gregg would then move on to a glass of wine – or big amounts – before he then finished off with a whisky.

The star also confessed he would sometimes “go to dinner drunk”.

Gregg told OK! : “Then I’d carry on with more. I could do that sometimes for two or three days on the trot.

“Then I’d just collapse onto a sofa somewhere and sleep.”

The star even became a regular at his city pub and says the landlord would come and open up for him at 10am.

He continued by explaining when he drank so much in the morning and where he got it from.

Gregg said at his lowest he wanted to ‘die’

Gregg said: “When you’re trading fruit and veg as I used to, your day starts early.

“So yes, by 10am I’d be banging on the door of a City pub.

“The landlord came down in his dressing gown to open up for me, the window cleaner and a drunken lawyer.”

The star said that if he had carried on he’d have “serious liver problems”.

Gregg revealed that on one occasion he felt like “‘death” and “‘wanted to die” and felt “scared”.

He recalled how he was once preparing to meet a big customer for lunch, and had a particularly long lunch and dinner the day before.

Gregg said: “I felt like death. All I wanted to do was go somewhere and die.

“Yet I ordered a gin and tonic, knocked that back, and felt instantly better. Then I had another one, and thought ‘Oh. This is an issue’.”
