On Sunday (June 20), Meghan Markle spoke to NPR about Father’s Day, her husband and her new book The Bench.
In the interview, which was released on Sunday, Meghan explained how her book was inspired by watching her husband handle their son, Archie.
“I often find, and especially in this past year, I think so many of us realised how much happens in the quiet,” Meghan shared.
The 39-year-old mother released her debut children’s book The Bench on June 8 to celebrate Father’s Day.
Becoming a New York Times bestseller, The Bench captures the special relationship between father and son, as seen through a mother’s eyes.
The book is written by the Duchess of Sussex and illustrated by Christian Robinson and shows fathers sharing small, quiet moments with their sons throughout.
Filled with delicate water colour illustrations, The Bench is whimsy and magical.
Meghan described the book as a “love story”.
She shared: “It’s really just about growing with someone and having this deep connection and this trust so that, be it good times or bad, you know that you had this person,
“I really hope that people can see this as a love story that transcends the story of my family.”
The book has a special and sentimental meaning for Meghan and Harry, as for his first Father’s Day, Meghan got him a bench.
“I just wanted something sentimental and a place for him to have as a bit of a home base with our son.”
The former actress wrote the poem as a gift for Harry on his first Father’s Day. The poem was engraved on a plaque for the bench she gave her husband for the same occasion.
“This is your bench,” the poem reads, “Where life will begin/For you and our son/Our baby, our kin.”
