Meghan says sister Samantha 'changed name back to Markle' after Harry romance

Meghan Markle has slammed her half-sister Samantha for changing her surname to Markle when she began a relationship with Prince Harry.

During her interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex, 39, said she “grew up as an only child” and that the last time she saw her half-sibling was 19 years ago.

The TV host quizzed Meghan on her thoughts on Samantha’s “tell-all” book about her.

Pregnant Meghan told Oprah: “I think it’d be very hard to tell all when you don’t know me.

“When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone that you have a relationship with. I don’t feel comfortable talking about people that I really don’t know.”

Discussing her childhood, Meghan said: “I wished I had siblings. I would have loved to have had siblings.

“I mean, the last time I saw [Samantha] must have been at least 18, 19 years ago. And before that, ten years before that.”

Meghan went on to claim that Samantha changed her surname to Markle around the same time her and Harry began a relationship.

“She changed her last name back to Markle. And I think she was in her early 50s at that time, only when I started dating Harry,” Meghan said.

“So I think that says enough.”

During the two-hour long chat, which is set to air in the UK tonight, Harry, 36, also revealed his father Prince Charles has “made peace” with the “toxic environment”.

In a clip from the interview, Oprah asked: “Has anybody said ‘I’m sorry you had to make that move’ or ‘I’m sorry you felt that you had to do that because you felt we’re not supporting you’.

Harry replied: “No, sadly not. The feeling is that this was our decision and therefore the consequences are on us.

“And despite of three years of asking for help and seeing or visualising how this might end, it’s been really hard.

“I am part of the system with them, I always have been, but I guess my brother can’t leave that system but I have?”

“Did your brother want to leave the system?, the host probed.

The Duke of Sussex replied: “I don’t know I can’t speak for him but I will always be there for him and my family and I tried to help the see what has happened.”

Oprah added: “Do they think its a toxic environment or do you think it a toxic environment because you’re now out of it?

“Does your father think its a toxic environment or a relationship?

“He’s had to make peace with it,” Prince Harry replied.

The TV host asked: Why couldn’t you both make peace with it?

Meghan, who is a mother to one-year-old Archie, added: “This was different because of the race and social media.

“Kate [Middleton]was called Waity Katie, waiting to marry William, while I imagine that was really hard and I do, this is not the same and if a member of his family will comfortably say we’ve all had to deal with things that are rude.

“Rude and racist are not the same.”
