Met Gala 2021 in numbers – Lil Nas X's three outfits to mechanical babies

Every year, fans wait patiently for the Met Gala – a place where creativity meets fashion, colour and art.

Audiences every year are blown away by the glamourous and often outrageous gowns worn by many of the biggest stars in society, from A list actors to popular sports personalities.

While the Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, it also showcases the pinnacle of fashion of the guest come dressed in outlandish interpretations of the annual theme.

The theme for this year was America, and it saw celebrities like Nikkie de Jager (Nikkie Tutorials) pay homage to trans icon Marsha P. Johnson in a stunning gown by Edwin Oudshoorn, while Kim Kardashian wore a controversial Balenciaga ‘blackout gown’.

The response to the gala hits new heights each year with Vogue’s YouTube videos of celebrities getting Met Gala ready already reaching millions and thousands of memes taking over Twitter.

The floods of Instagram pictures can be, well, a little overwhelming so we’ve broken down the event for you into some of the many highlights in numbers.

1 – The number of mechanical babies at the event (yes, you read that right). Frank Ocean’s plus one came in the form of a lime green, almost ghoulish robotic baby which seemed to move of his own accord. The infant’s name you ask? Cody of course.

3 – Lil Nas X showcased no less than three outfits by Donatella Versace during his entrance; a regal looking cloak, a golden suit of armour and a bodysuit covered in crystals.

4 – There were four co-chairs of the event this year, singer Billie Eilish, tennis pro Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet and poet Amanda Gorman.

10 – The event saw a plant-based menu created by ten emerging chefs from New York, each chosen by chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelson.

40 Gymnast Simone Biles’ crystal-encrusted gown from Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk’s label Area, weighed an astonishing 40kg, complete with a team of six to help her navigate the notorious steps.

154 – Talking of the steps, they are an incredible 154ft wide – a perfect backdrop to snap those iconic shots.

600 – The number of guests is usually around 600, however this year appeared to be smaller in size to adhere to Covid guidelines.

30,000 – Ticket prices are reported to cost around $30,000 whereas purchasing a table will cost you a minimum of $275,000.

2,900,000 –@Saint Hoax, social media influencer and The Met Gala’s first ever ‘meme correspondent’, shared live social media content to the account’s 2,900,000 followers.

15,000,000 – It has not yet been reported how much this year’s event raised for the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts but annually an average of $15,000,000 is raised.

18,445,540 – At the time of writing, singer Billie Eilish has attracted an incredible 18,445,540 likes on an Instagram picture shared by the star of her Marilyn Monroe-esque Oscar de la Renta gown.
