Naga Munchetty hits out at 'stupid people' during Morning Live appearance

Naga Munchetty was left fuming during an appearance on BBC’s Morning Live this Monday.

The BBC Breakfast presenter was busy chatting to hosts Gethin Jones and Sara Cox about her BBC docuseries Claimed and Shamed, which investigates cases of insurance fraud.

But she didn’t hold back in her sharp-tongued assessment of those who commit acts of fraud, as she explained that £1.2billion of fraudulent claims are made each year – which can affect the insurance premiums of others.

She explained: “You’ve got to clamp down on this.

“Actually, you just think, ‘You stupid people’! That’s what you think. One of the highlights of Claimed and Shamed, there was someone who claimed their wedding rings were stolen.

“And, right, we all post on social media. Don’t claim your wedding rings are stolen and then wear them a few weeks later on social media! It’s just the stupidity of some of these people, trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes!”

Naga added: “There was another one – you’re working with your laptop, Sara. You’re doing some DIY, you’ve got an electric saw out and accidentally saw your laptop in half.”

Sara joked: “Oh, I’ve done that a couple of times!”

Naga kidded: “It’s so annoying when that happens.”

Another story tackled injury fraud, as Naga explained: “There were a couple of guys who planned falling down a drainage hole and then got caught planning it to make an injury claim.

“And you just think… especially with the dash-cam stuff, you can look at it and think, ‘This is funny, and it’s stupid’.

“But it’s dangerous! What if there was a child in that car, or just a frail person in that car and you’re hit hard. Just think!” she warned.

Naga went on to share an instance of when she’d been caught up in a car crash, to advise people on what to look out for when involved in an insurance claim that could be fraudulent.

“I think if it seems too planned. I’ve been in a car accident, and you’re in shock, aren’t you?

“You’re just trying to think, ‘What’s happened here?’ You don’t automatically think, ‘How much can I claim?’, you just try and see if everyone’s safe, am I okay, is my car damaged and how much is that going to cost?

“If someone’s all of a sudden saying, ‘Well, that was your fault, you were going at 42 miles per hour, you think, ‘Hold on, you’ve got this a little bit too organised, haven’t you?'”

“The insurance investigators know this, when the story seems just that little bit too neat and too prepared. So I think always keep a record of everything that happens – and try to get witnesses.

“And keep calm, because it’s easy to be bullied, I think, into being told that it’s your fault.”

Morning Live airs weekdays from 9:15am on BBC One.
