Netflix viewers horrified at 'distasteful' Prince Philip death joke on Death to 2021

Netflix’s new satirical documentary show Death To 2021, made by Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, arrived on the streaming platform yesterday and has caused an uproar on social media.

This year’s episode is the second instalment of the assumed series as Death To 2020 was released this time last year.

Many viewers were shocked at the mockumentary’s tongue in cheek attitude, crude jokes and offensive caricatures. One such segment, about Prince Philip’s death in April, raised a few eyebrows amongst viewers.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had been married for 73 years, making him the longest serving royal consort in history.

News of his death shocked the nation and he was buried soon after in Saint George’s Chapel on 17th April.

During Death To 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah is touched upon and comments were made about the effect this momentous event had on the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip spent a long and happy life together

Harry and Meghan spoke to American presenter and host Oprah back in March, a year after the couple had decided that they wanted to step down as active members of the British royal family.

A clip of the interview was played and the narrator laughs, saying: “After the interview, Prince Philip withdraws from public life permanently, by dying. Millions watched the funeral of his Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke Of Deadinburgh.”

The comedy show labels it’s style as: “The documentary-style special mixes archival footage harvested from across the year with commentary from fictitious characters played by some of the world’s most beloved actors.”

Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones’ dark sense of humour appears to shine through in this episode and the Prince Philip segment left many viewers shocked and amazed at the comments made by their beloved prince.

Viewers took to social media to share their distaste: “Death to 2021 is terribly brilliant and chaotic, the Prince Philip gag was maybe a step too far though.”

Another said: “The Prince Philip joke was a touch too far and maybe a little distasteful, but the rest of the show was spot on!”

The Queen mentioned Prince Philip in her annual Christmas message this year

“He said Prince Philip withdrew from public life permanently. Rude,” tweeted another.

Harsher critics were also unimpressed with the show. The Telegraph awarded the programme with a measly one star rating, saying that the: ““end-of-year review lacks its creator’s acerbic wit and creaks its way through gags any TV owner will have heard before”.
