Normal People's Paul Mescal struggling with lack of work and has spent show pay

Paul Mescal was so poorly paid for Normal People he blew his wage buying one round of drinks for the cast.

The Irish actor has since struggled with work slowing down amid the coronavirus lockdowns.

Paul told OK! magazine about how he spent his acting cheque from BBC Three’s raunchy hit Normal People: “I did stupid things like buying the cast a round of drinks, which was pretty much my entire wage!”

He added he has been trying to cheer himself up during isolation by using exercise to release the so-called happiness hormone serotonin.

The 24-year-old said: “I’ve struggled with the absence of work.

“A vast period of the day which would’ve been occupied is now totally unoccupied.

“My life is a lot of Zoom calls and lots of running.

“I’ve been trying to get as much serotonin as I can. Serotonin is a wonderful thing.”

He is now filming a movie adaptation of the opera Carmen in Australia after finding fame playing lovelorn school student Connell Waldron in BBC hit Normal People.

Paul said he is also aiming to launch a singing career, saying he would love to duet with pop star Billie Eilish.

Paul, who became quite the heartthrob following landing the role on the steamy show, opened up about the likelihood Normal People will return for a second series back in December.

Paul isn’t sure if the show will return

Speaking to Digital Spy, he shared that the show’s return is “no more likely or less likely”.

He added: “The team behind Normal People are now concentrating all their efforts into Conversations with Friends, which I cannot wait to watch, and I’m deeply jealous of the actors who are going to be working on that.”
