Oprah Winfrey has come to the defence of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, insisting every revelation in their groundbreaking interview was “truthful”.
Making headlines internationally, the talk show host, 67, saw her two-hour special with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex air on CBS on March 7.
Meghan and Harry shared a number of shocking revelations in the interview, revealing concerns had been raised in the Royal family over the colour of their son Archie’s skin.
Elsewhere, Meghan said she’d battled suicidal thoughts in recent years, turning to Harry and seeking help for her mental health.
Harry also explained he felt his father and brother, Prince Charles and William, were “trapped” in the institution of the monarchy.
While many praised Meghan and Harry’s bravery in coming forward with the revelations, the interview divided opinion, leading to widespread debate in the media.
Defending her friends, Oprah appeared on Nancy O’Dell’s TalkShopLive show this week and said everything discussed in the interview was truthful.
“I had no idea that it would have the reverberating impact that it has had and continues to have,” she said.
“I did a lot of preparation for that.
“Our shared intention was the truth. They wanted to be able to tell their story and tell it in such a way that allowed them to be as truthful as possible.
“What makes [an interview] powerful is when you have somebody else who is willing to be as open, as vulnerable, as truthful as they were, so I don’t give myself credit for that.”
The US TV star added she had communicated with Harry and Meghan over text prior to the interview, ensuring they could “align their goal” in sharing the truth.

After the interview aired, Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of the Queen, empathising with Harry and Meghan.
It read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.
“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
