The 2021 Oscars received several complaints by viewers on Sunday evening, as many believed the memorial segment was “rushed”.
While others aired their disappointment over the “upbeat” soundtrack that was used to commemorate the stars.
During the ceremony every year, amongst the glitz and glam, the Oscars takes a moment to reflect on the talent that has unfortunately passed away in the past year.
Those who have contributed to the film industry over the years such as performers, directors, make-up artists, and publicists all receive an honourable mention.
This year, stars such as Chadwick Boseman, Helen McCrory, and Sir Sean Connery were remembered in the short piece.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the award ceremony tragically had a lot more names to cover this time round.
Actress Angela Basset who introduced the honorary section this year made reference to the pandemic and highlighted the fact that the virus had claimed over 3million deaths.
The star said: “As of April 25, 2021, there were recorded over 3 million souls lost around the world to COVID alone.
“Considering the enormity of our collective loss and the often incomprehensible times we’re living through, we wish to also acknowledge those precious lives lost to the violence of inequality, injustice, hatred, racism, and poverty.”
She added: “To all of those who left our lives too soon, we cherish the moments that we had the honor of having with you.”
The three-minute tribute paid homage to the late stars by featuring their photos, names and job titles.
However, despite the tributes going ahead as scheduled many viewers complained about the upbeat Steevie Wonder soundtrack that was used to respect the late stars.
Taking their opinions to Twitter one viewer penned: “This is the most upbeat In Memoriam I’ve ever seen wtf.”
While another said: “They sure are speeding through these names in Memoriam.”
Another view also complained about the speed of the segment and said: “In Memoriam Oscar so poorly handled who pushed fast forward?”
To add salt to the wound, viewers also noticed that some stars were not featured at all in the memorial section.
Naya Rivera, star of the musical sitcom Glee passed away last year following a lake accident. Despite the star’s contribution to film and television, she was not featured on the list.
American actress Jessica Walter, who had a career spanning from 1963 to 2021 was also not included on the list, despite passing away last month.
Adam Schlesinger who was nominated for an Oscar in 1997 for Best Original Song with That Thing You Do! did not receive a mention at all either.
The stars missing from the list were evidently noticed by fans which led them to take to Twitter once more to air their annoyance.
One viewer penned: “The In Memorium section of the #Oscars is always rough, but how on earth did they not include Jessica Walter.”
While another commented: “Once again, no love for Naya Rivera. #Oscars.”
