Celebrities, actors, writers and directors flock together each year to celebrate all that was great in the movie industry that year – but sometimes, the prim and proper awards ceremony doesn’t always go to plan.

As we await to see what drama unfolds on Sunday night’s long-awaited ceremony, here, we take a look back at some of the most scandalous moments from the Oscars down through the years.
Marlon Brando refuses to accept his accolade, 1973
Back in 1973, Marlon Brando made headlines when he surprisingly refused to accept his Oscar.
The Hollywood hunk bagged an award for Best Actor for his epic performance as Vito Corleone in The Godfather.
Despite being awarded the amazing accolade, Marlon made the decision to boycott the ceremony, and instead, asked Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather to go up on stage and refuse the award on his behalf.
The young woman was booed by the audience when she cited “the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry and on television and movie re-runs” as his reason for refusal.
In the full speech released to the press Brando stated: “The motion picture community has been as responsible as any for degrading the Indian and making a mockery of his character, describing his as savage, hostile and evil.”
Susan Sarandon gets Oscars ban after HIV speech, 1993
In 1993, Susan Sarandon used her time on the Oscars stage to speak out against the treatment of HIV sufferers.
Both Susan and fellow actor Tim Robbins made a furious speech about how HIV-positive Haitians were treated by American society.
Elsewhere, Richard Gere condemned China’s invasion of Tibet during his speech, and as a result, all three Hollywood stars were banned from ever returning to the Academy Awards again.
The producer of the 1993 awards, Gil Gates, was so furious that he stated the three stars could never return to the prestigious ceremony.
Despite the life-long ban, Susan did return just three years later when she won Best Actress.

As she graced the stage to accept her coveted award for Best Supporting Actress, the stunning star claimed that she was “so in love” with her brother.
“I’m in shock and I’m so in love with my brother right now,” she gushed.
“He just held me and said that he loves me and I know that he’s so happy for me.”
Sacha Baron Cohen brings bizarre plus one to the awards, 2012
While he’s known and loved for his controversial pranks and outrageous humour, Sacha Baron Cohen created a media storm when he brought Kim Jong-Il ashes to the ceremony.
During his red-carpet interview with TV host Ryan Seacrest, Sacha made a number of highly controversial remarks where he claimed Sadam Hussain had given him fashion advise before producing a strange jar with North Korea’s late leader plastered on the front.
The movie star joked that Kim Jong-Il had always dreamed about attending the Oscars and he then tipped the jar open on top of Seacrest and proclaimed: “Now when people ask you what you’re wearing, you can say Kim Jong-Il.”
