Pete Doherty's life uncovered – addiction, Kate Moss and a 'dodgy' death

Pete Doherty has led a colourful life to say the least, with many amazed that he’s actually celebrating his 42nd birthday today (March 12).

The Libertines frontman boasts quite an extensive list of former flames, including supermodel Kate Moss and Back To Black star Amy Winehouse who tragically passed away in July 2011.

In spite of Pete’s best efforts to become clean, it never really happened even though he’d ventured to Thailand six years ago to shut out the world and focus on being rehabilitated.

Back in 2019 the star revealed to the Guardian that within “just 10 minutes” of being back at his home in Margate he was up to his old tricks again.

The Babyshambles hitmaker has also been linked to a number of deaths which have probably contributed to his fame more so than his musical talent over the years.

Here, Daily Star uncovers the life of Pete Doherty.

Kate Moss romance

Pete and Kate Moss were lovers between 2005 and 2007, with the pair even getting engaged at one point during their romance.

According to Pete, he and the Rimmel front-woman had a turbulent two-year relationship that eventually came to a crashing end.

In 2007, Pete tried to win Kate over by speaking to the Daily Mirror in the hope that she would read his comments.

His declaration of love wasn’t exactly full of bells and whistles, with him claiming that Kate had a temper and was a “nasty old rag” who had “kicked [him] in the head”.

But he then passionately added: “I love her with all my heart. I like the way she walks and talks. I love her bones. I love her brain.”

Later that same year, in an interview with Matt Wilkinson for Apple Music’s Beat 1, the poet claimed that Kate had torched his teddy Pandy, hinting that this particular incident could have been the final straw.

Speaking about the burning of his teddy bear, he said: “Oh no, don’t mention Pandy. Pandy, when I split up with a certain young lady, she burnt it. She burnt Pandy.

“This is the teddy bear I’ve had since the day I was born and Pandy got burnt and that was the break-up.”

He explained: “My sister gave him to me as a huge gesture of love and kinship. I held on to Pandy all my life but he ended up getting burnt by Kate [Moss] along with a lot of other stuff when we split up.”

Despite all of the drama, it seems years later the pair may have patched up their friendship, with Pete claiming that Kate had called him to let him know she was now happy but “still rooting for him”.

Bloody artwork of the supermodel

Last year, Pete and Kate’s relationship ended up in the headlines again after the English musician’s gruesome artwork of the pair was being flogged for a hefty £5,000 sum.

The portrait in question was created using Pete’s own blood and a crayon.

While the picture came across as being quite abstract, Kate’s head can be made out on the righthand side of the canvas.

At the top of the artwork an inscription read: “Ray Heads the son.”

Speaking about his macabre hobby previously, Pete said: “Blood plays the starring role in my work – sweat and tears are often waiting in the wings.”

Mark Blanco death

In 2006, Mark Blanco plummeted to his death after falling from a balcony of a flat where a party was being held – of which Doherty was in attendance.

At the time, CCTV had showed that Pete had fled the crime scene and was spotted running away on camera.

Although the coroner had ruled out suicide in an open verdict and instructed the Metropolitan police to reopen its investigation, in 2011 the CPS said there had been insufficient evidence to charge anyone in connection with Blanco’s death.

In 2012, Pete spoke out for the first time about his actions that night, admitting he struggled to watch the CCTV footage.

He told the NME: “I can understand it does look dodgy.

“How ashamed do you think I am that I stepped over the body and legged it down the street?”

Pete added: “Ugh… [the film footage] made me feel sick, sick to the stomach. Completely ashamed. I’m stepping over a dying man… I was on bail at the time. I had pockets full of drugs.

“In my heart, I pray and pray that his mother will stop punishing and torturing herself because she is convinced that there was foul play. But I am certain there wasn’t.

“The door was bolted and there wasn’t anyone from the party outside on the balcony with him.”

Amy Winehouse affair

Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty had always denied that they were anything other than friends, although they’d been snapped together frequently.

The pair had struck up a romantic relationship in 2010 after one of Pete’s gigs, with Amy later visiting him – alongside her two bouncers – at his hotel.

In July 2011, the soul singer tragically died as a result of alcohol poisoning.

It wasn’t until the following year that Pete decided to lift the lid on their affair.

He told the Daily Mail at the time: “This is difficult for me to admit. But, yes, it’s true. Amy and I were lovers.

“I loved her then and, well, I still do today. But towards the end, as only lovers can, she became quite mean and cruel to me.

“She didn’t suffer fools . . . and believe me, she had a mean right hook.”

Robyn Whitehead death

On Sunday, January 24, 2010, Robyn Whitehead was pronounced dead following a suspected drug overdose in the Hackney flat where she had been filming Pete Doherty and his friend, Pete ‘Wolfman’ Wolfe.

Following the tragic death of Robyn, Doherty was sentenced to six months in prison for possession of class–A drugs after being filmed by Whitehead smoking crack just days before she died.

An inquest in 2015 also heard that Doherty’s pal Alan Wass had died after being unlawfully injected with heroin by an acquaintance.
