This Morning host Phillip Schofield couldn’t hold back as he made a cheeky quip about his sexuality after publicly coming out as gay last year.
The ITV programme scooped the gong for Daytime show at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards on Wednesday.
Phillip and his co-star Holly Willoughby took to the stage to accept the trophy, after their resounding success at the National Television Awards (NTAs) last week.
And Phil, who publicly came out as gay last year, couldn’t resist poking fun at himself as he thanked the This Morning team for their efforts in producing the show throughout the pandemic.
Taking the mic, Phillip said: “This is a big award for our show, thank you TRIC! It was, as we all know – and we all worked through it – how difficult it was. Our team was amazing.”
He continued: “It was scary, it was extraordinary, it was like nothing we’d ever experienced before but we still managed to get the show out day after day after day.
“And on a personal note, at the beginning of it all, I came out. The world went in!
“When you make a choice like that and suddenly the streets are empty and there’s no-one around, you’re thinking, ‘What the f*** did I just do?!'”
Schofe went on to pay tribute to his ‘best mate’ Holly, explaining: “My team; Holly, my best mate, saw me through it. We all were each other’s comfort blankets and we all looked after each other. Our viewers were essential to us, we were essential to them and for that, we thank you very much indeed.”
Also nominated for the Daytime TV award were Steph’s Packed Lunch and ITV quiz show The Chase.
Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway, meanwhile, picked up the TRIC Special Award trophy after an emotional video showing her reporting highlights over the years.
Phillip initially came out to the public as gay in February 2020, initially announcing on social media: “With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.”
He was later interviewed live on This Morning by Holly in a sweet, supportive segment.
At the time, Holly posted on Instagram: “Never been more proud of my friend than I am today.”
On the show, the blonde beauty gave Phillip a massive hug as she said: “I will be by your side forever.”
