Piers Morgan has revealed he got a fake apology from Cristiano Ronaldo after he’d begged him not to score against Arsenal when they faced Manchester United earlier in December.
The former Good Morning Britain host has interviewed countless famous faces including world leaders, but it seems his favourite flex is the time super-fit Cristiano complimented his abdominals.
In fact, the video clip featuring the niceties is pinned to the top of his Twitter feed for his 7.9million followers to see.
Despite the apparent friendship, Piers has now revealed that Cristiano mocked him when he pleaded with him not to score.
Of course, the Portuguese pro went on to score United’s second and third goals in the match against Arsenal.
In his Daily Mail column, Piers confessed he’d begged the dad-of-four not to score but to no avail.
He wrote: “Arsenal played Manchester United tonight and I sent Cristiano Ronaldo a desperate plea before kick-off: ‘Please don’t score against us…’
“Of course, he scored twice, and United won 3-2.”
Piers, whose latest column with the paper was his last, went on: “‘Sorry,’ Cristiano texted back after the final whistle.”
Adding: “I would have accepted the apology if it hadn’t also contained a laughing emoji.”
The unlikely duo became friends after Piers sat down with the football ace in 2019 for a tell-all interview, which was also when Cristiano dropped the compliment on Piers.
Piers explained that Cristiano had DMed him on Instagram previously, saying he’d loved watching him interview murderers on Netflix.
“Once I’d got over the shock of one of my all-time sporting heroes contacting me out of the blue,” Piers said, “I rapidly pulled myself together and put on my professional game-face.
“‘I’d find it fascinating to interview YOU one day…’ I suggested, putting out my fishing rod.”
And although Cristiano joked he “hadn’t killed anyone”, the interview still went ahead.
The ITV special Cristiano Ronaldo Meets Piers Morgan aired in 2019, and nothing was off the table.
They discussed the sportsman’s life, relationships and his struggles on the hour-long episode.
