Piers Morgan slams Meghan's claims Archie was denied title due to skin colour

Piers Morgan has branded Meghan Markle’s claims that her son Archie was denied a title due to his skin colour “complete nonsense”.

In his bombshell Daily Mail column, Piers detailed his thoughts on the Duchess of Sussex’s jaw-dropping Oprah interview.

Piers wrote: “The longer the interview went on, the less I believed.”

He raised Meghan’s assertions that she and Prince Harry got married in a secret ceremony three days before their official wedding, officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

“Really?” Piers penned. “So, the marriage we all watched was a sham? And Britain’s most senior clergyman was in on it, performing an illegal ceremony in a garden?

Piers said Meghan’s claims were “complete nonsense”

“But far more serious was the sensational implication that Archie was barred from being a Prince because of his skin colour.

“It sounded complete nonsense when she said it, and it is; he’s not a Prince because, technically, the great grandchildren of the Monarch are not bestowed with titles ‘Prince’ or ‘Princess’ unless they’re in the direct line to the throne. This rule applies regardless of the child’s mother’s ethnicity.”

Piers was referencing the 1917 letter, in which King George V declared that the great-grandchildren of the monarch would no longer be princes or princesses, except for the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.

That means Prince George automatically became a prince.

However, in December 2012 the Queen issued a letter patent which said that all of Prince William’s children would be entitled to the HRH title – abandoning the historic protocol.

Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte too inherited their titles according to the 2012 letter.

But not Archie, who will have to wait until Prince Charles inherits the throne.

But Piers didn’t reference the Queen’s policy change in his article.

He said that although Prince Harry and Meghan said they were trying to support the Queen, their assertions meant they were instead “effectively accusing” her of “being racist”.

Piers called such assertions a “disgraceful betrayal” and claimed Meghan also “attacked” Kate Middleton for “making her cry”.

Piers also cast doubt on Meghan’s heartbreaking admission that she was suicidal during her Oprah interview.

“If she was suicidal, then why didn’t Harry get her the urgent help she needed?” he wrote.

His former GMB co-host Susanna Reid hit back at his scepticism, and said: “Well, that’s a pathetic reaction to someone who’s expressed those thoughts.”

In the UK, there are more than 6,000 deaths by suicide every year.

Piers said guests on the ITV show including Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu called him a “liar” and a “disgrace”.

Dr Mos-Shogbamimu added: “You constantly use your platform as a wealthy white privileged man with power and influence to aggravate and escalate the bigoted, sexist, racist and misogynistic attacks on Meghan Markle.”

She also asked on GMB: “What kind of grandmother would protect her own son, Prince Andrew, from the potential crime of raping a minor, but will do jack-all to protect Harry and Meghan?”

But Piers insists he isn’t racist.

He claimed he’s never said anything racist against Meghan, and only welcomed her as a bi-racial woman marrying into the Royal Family.

The bombshell interview has caused international controversy

He also said ITV told him he “didn’t need to apologise” for what he said on the programme.

Piers stormed off set after an explosive row with weather presenter Alex Beresford, which led to him quitting the show for good.

Piers also appeared to disparage Alex’s comments about having a “lived experience” of racism, adding that the notion is “ridiculous” if Meghan’s claims are “false”.

The Royal Family has, however, been embroiled in racist controversies for years.

In 2009, Prince Harry himself was widely condemned after being caught on film calling a former Army colleague “our little P**i friend”.

He also caused outrage in 2005 when he wore a Nazi soldier uniform – complete with a swastika – for a fancy dress party.

Since then, he has admitted that his privileged upbringing made him aware of “unconscious racial bias”.

Prince William also said the Royal Family is “very much not a racist family”.
