Piers Morgan wishes GMB weatherman Alex Beresford 'good luck' after fiery clash

Piers Morgan has wished Alex Beresford “good luck” after the pair clashed on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, hours before he quit the show.

The 55-year-old confirmed he was leaving GMB after five years, amid an Ofcom investigation into his coverage of Oprah Winfrey’s Meghan Markle interview.

Weatherman Alex appeared on Tuesday’s GMB, speaking out against Piers’ treatment of the Duchess of Sussex on the Monday episode.

During the debate, Piers stormed off set, refusing to engage in the conversation with his ITV co-star.

However, when asked what he would like to say to his Good Morning Britain colleague, Piers told the press outside his home: “Good luck to him.”

On Tuesday, Alex suggested Piers dislike of Meghan stemmed from their former friendship, saying: “I understand that you do not like Meghan Markle and you have made it clear so many times – so many times on this programme.

“And I understand you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off. She is entitled to cut you off if she wants to.”

Over 41,000 viewers contacted the watchdog to complain about Monday’s GMB, which saw Piers at one point claim he “didn’t believe anything” the Duchess of Sussex had said in the interview.

Alex said he wished he had the privilege to sit “on the fence”

Prompting Piers to walk off-set, he continued: “Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? Now, I do not think she has. But yet you continue to trash her.”

After almost 15 minutes off-air, Piers finally returned and held a discussion with meteorologist Alex, listening to his perspective on the bombshell interview between Meghan, Prince Harry, and Oprah.

Alex added: “I’m not, by no way shape or form, accusing you of being a racist.

“I know where you stand on things. I’ve got a great amount of respect for you Piers.”

When filming wrapped, Alex took to social media to explain his decision to speak out against Piers, admitting he felt a responsibility to defend Meghan.

He said: “I wish I had the privilege to sit on the fence. In order for me to do that, I would have to strip myself of my identity and that’s not something I can do. It’s not any of our places to pick apart claims of racism in order to make us to feel more comfortable.”

ITV confirmed Piers would not return to GMB on Tuesday evening, saying: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Speaking out on his exit, Piers shared an image of his late manager, John Ferriter, hours later, saying: “He’d have told me to do exactly the same thing.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
