Piers Morgan would be 'huge asset' for GB News as boss confirms they're in talks

GB News boss Andrew Neil has confirmed he’s in talks with Piers Morgan to snap him up following his exit from Good Morning Britain.

Piers Morgan quit Good Morning Britain after Ofcom confirmed they were investigating comments he made on the show, after they received more than 41,000 complaints.

Phillip Schofield asked Andrew on This Morning about the likelihood of Piers getting a spot on the hosting line-up of GB News.

The 71-year-old will present a nightly news show on his new network, but has made it clear he’s keen to sign Piers.

He told Schofe: “We’re open to all sorts of offers.

“We’re about to launch GB News, I think Piers would be a huge asset.”

But he went on to explain: “I wouldn’t want to transfer what he was doing for GMB to GB News.

“I’d want to do something different at a different time of day,” he added.

Phillip suggested that may not be the best way to use the controversial presenter though, as he was highly praised – and slammed – for what he did on Good Morning Britain.

Andrew said: “He is what he is, but I think he’s adaptable and can do different things in different ways.”

He added: “I think he would be a huge asset to our channel if we could get him and we will try and do so.

“He won’t be short of offers, so no doubt there’ll be some competition.”

Schofe warned Andrew that he’d need to dig deep in his pockets to land Piers though, as his reported salary for Good Morning Britain was £1.1million – for just three days of work a week, with lengthy holidays included.

On Wednesday evening, on BBC News, Andrew offered Piers a job live on-air, saying: “We haven’t started any negotiations yet. We would certainly be delighted to talk to him if he’s up for it.”

It was confirmed by ITV that Piers had left Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, not long after Ofcom said they would be investigating the comments he made about Meghan Markle.

The channel said in a statement: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.”

Piers had said on GMB that he “didn’t believe” what Meghan Markle had said about her mental health struggles and suicidal thoughts.

He has stood by his words though, tweeting that “freedom of speech is a hill [he’s] happy to die on”.

“Thanks for all the love, and hate,” he added. “I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV
