Katie Price has narrowly missed heading to prison this Christmas after she was given a suspended sentence for her multiple driving offences, however Supt James Collis, Head of Roads Policing for Sussex and Surrey Police, is looking at whether the sentence can be appealed.
The ex-glamour model pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and driving while unfit through drink back in September after she crashed while under the influence of booze and cocaine – although she was not charged with any drug-related offences.
However, the mum-of-five will be around this Christmas and not behind bars, but that isn’t what should have happened, claims the Collis.
In a statement released alongside Sussex Police’s announcement of the sentence on Twitter, Collis revealed they will be looking into whether they can appeal the sentence.
Sussex Police’s statement read: “Katie Price, 43, of Worthing Road, Rial Post, Horsham, has today been sentenced at Crawley Magistrates’ Court after she pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and driving while unfit through drink.
“It related to a single vehicle collision in West Grinstead at 6.20am on September 28 this year.
“She was given a 16-week suspended sentence, with 100 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) sessions to be completed within the next 12 months. The court also disqualified her from driving for two years and ordered her to pay £85 costs.”
Supt James Collis, Head of Roads Policing for Sussex and Surrey Police, also commented on the result and said: “Today’s sentencing, as the judge explained, could have and should have been much worse and, in our view, Price is extremely lucky not to be spending Christmas behind bars.
“Given the circumstances and her history of motoring offences, it’s clear she did not consider the risk of her actions to the wider public or the implications for her own family. We are now exploring whether we can appeal this sentence.”
This comes after the 43-year-old former glamour model appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday following the crash near her home in Sussex in September.
She had previously admitted to drink-driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
After a short hearing, District Judge Kelly sentenced Katie to a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
The TV star will also have to undergo 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.
Her driving ban has been kept to two years and the reality star will not have to take an extended driving test.
There will be no separate penalty for the charge of driving without insurance.
According to the prosecution, Katie had an alcohol level from a breath test of 66mg – the limit is 35mg.
She had consumed cocaine, vodka and lemonade before the crash, Sussex Live reports.
