Royal commentator Russell Myers believes Prince Harry could have potential disagreements with Netflix and might be seen as a “one-trick pony” as he discusses his future with the streaming giant.
Momentarily, Harry has more pressing matters on his mind as he is currently preparing to make his way back to the UK for his grandfather’s funeral.
It has been reported that The Duke of Sussex is expected to make the trip to England solo as his wife Meghan Markle is heavily pregnant.
This will be the first time Harry will touch down in Britain since the couple’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired on ITV in March.
The couple broke away from the Royal Family in the hopes of leading a more “financially independent” life.
Harry and Meghan’s deal with Netflix and Spotify is said to be worth £110million, according to reports, but royal correspondents have warned that Harry in particular may have to try and keep the streaming giants happy.
In the latest episode of Pod Save The Queen hosted by Ann Gripper featuring Daily Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers, Russell spoke openly about Netflix’s documentary on Harry’s experience at the Invictus Games.
Ann said: “To a certain extent it’s an absolute no-brainer because it’s a great subject, with easy access and it’s Harry’s project: “The Invictus Games.”
Russell replied: “Yeah, it’s going to be great.”
“You can imagine a big Netflix production in line with The Invictus Games that Harry had founded and taken from strength to strength.”
He added: “It’s undoubtedly going to follow some really amazing stories with its competitors ‒ some of whom I was lucky enough to meet in Sydney at the last Invictus Games in 2018.”
But Russell did express his concerns that Netflix may eventually become frustrated given the similarity in the content that Harry is currently working on.
He continued: “Like you say, it’s a no-brainer.
“I know this criticism has been labelled at Harry and Meghan, well certainly Harry. What else is he going to speak about?
“After you’re speaking about your mother and the trauma you’ve had since her death, you’ve spoken about mental health on so many levels. Now you’re doing stuff for the Invictus Games. What will come afterwards?
“And that will be a very interesting question. So, later on in the year and in proceeding years, what will happen? I don’t necessarily buy this but I think some people have said Harry might be seen as a one-trick pony.
“It will be very interesting to see how much Netflix back him because they’re obviously paying both of them a lot of money.”
Harry and Meghan revealed to the nation on Wednesday that their first feature is entitled Heart Of Invictus which will be produced by their Archewell Productions company.
The docu-series will follow the competitors as they prepare to take part in the 2022 games.
As well as appearing on screen, Harry will serve as executive producer. The documentary is directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Joanna Natasegara.
