Prince Harry has told Oprah Winfrey on Apple TV’s new documentary series The Me That You Can’t See that ‘forces’ tried to make his and wife Meghan Markle’s split from the Royal Family impossible.
Speaking candidly in the documentary, Harry said: “Without therapy and without doing the work we would not be able to withstand this.
“I’ve never had any anger through this. I’ve always had compassion. Making this move was really scary.
“At every possible opportunity the forces that were working against us tried to make it impossible.
“Did I expect to find ourselves in this situation so quickly? No.”
Doubling down on his decision to quit the Royal Family, Harry added: “I think we’ve done a really good job and I have no regrets.
“It’s incredibly sad but I have no regrets at all because now I’m in a place where I feel I should have been four years ago.”
Reflecting on his late mother, Harry added that he has felt the late Princess Diana with him more in the past 12 months than ever before.
He added that he is now living the life she wanted.
During the candid chat, Harry explained how the pain left by the death of his late mother caused him to turn to drink and drugs in his late 20s.
He told Oprah: “One of the feelings that comes up with me always is the helplessness…That happened every single day until the day she died.
“I was willing to drink, I was willing to take drugs, I was willing to try and do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling.
“But I slowly became aware that, okay, I wasn’t drinking Monday to Friday, but I would probably drink a week’s worth in one day on a Friday or a Saturday night.
“And I would find myself drinking, not because I was enjoying it but because I was trying to mask something.”
Harry says he has no regrets about his decision to quit life as a full-time royal, though admits he find the situation sad at times.
He claims that he feared history repeating itself and that his wife Meghan would end up dead.
Harry said of Megixt: “Eventually when I made that decision for my family, I was still told, ‘You can’t do this,’
“And it’s like, ‘Well how bad does it have to get until I am allowed to do this?’
“She was going to end her life. It shouldn’t have to get to that.”
