One of Princess Diana’s wedding dress designers has explained how he saved the Princess of Wales from an awkward wardrobe malfunction just before she walked down the aisle.
Opening up on Lorraine on Thursday, dress designer David Emmanuel, who helped design the iconic garment alongside his former wife Elizabeth, shared how he saved Diana from an embarrassing dress fail.
As Diana prepared to walk down the aisle to meet Prince Charles, David checked with her that she’d properly hooked up her petticoat – only to discover that she hadn’t.
Host Cat Deeley asked: “I know there’s one special memory that you have, because obviously she had those big, billowing, crinoline skirts.
“Was there a problem fastening it at one stage before she left? So you had to basically go underneath her dress and then when you popped up you came face to face with somebody?
“You’ve done your research, girl! I take my hat off to you,” David praised Cat, before explaining: “She was all dressed ready to go, looking fabulous, with beautiful blue eyes and I just quickly said to her, ‘Darling did you check the hooks in your petticoat?’
“She goes ‘No’. And I had visions of arriving at St. Paul’s and that huge plume petti would have just gone adrift. It would have taken off,” he explained.
“So I said, ‘Only one way to find out!’ and went under and out to check the thing.”
He continued: “And as I was resurfacing under her wedding gown, Diana said, ‘David, have you met the Queen Mother?’
“And there, standing right there, was the Queen Mother with a rather quizzical look on her face, like ‘What on earth is he doing under her skirt?'”
Diana’s dress will be put on display at Kensington Palace for a public exhibition – something that clearly made David emotional.
He recalled: “But all those memories come back. She was just fun, and full of life, and once those blue eyes set upon you, it was all over.”
David’s ex-wife Elizabeth appeared on Good Morning Britain this morning to dish who was “really” in charge of designing the dress.
Temporary host Richard Madeley quizzed her: “As the weeks went by, and the designs chopped and changed and you gradually honed it down to the extraordinary thing you created, who was in charge, was it you and your husband or was it Diana?”

And Elizabeth replied: “I think Diana came with us because of our style.
“So she loved what we did anyway,” she added.
“So we just presented her with lots of sketches, she tried on a sample gown.”
