Queen told Tom Daley 'secret passion' and jokes she should try gymnastics

Tom Daley has confessed that a brief chat between he and The Queen saw them discuss the potential of a career as a gymnast.

The Queen often meets Olympians to congratulate them in their success, and due to Tom’s impressive career, he has shared multiple encounters with the monarch.

In fact, one of his encounters with Her Majesty took place in 2016, and it’s one that Tom hasn’t forgotten easily as he was informed of her secret passion and appreciation of Olympians.

The Mirror reported that the Queen revealed gymnastics was her “secret passion” when the pair met in 2018, with Tom recalling the encounter on a Swedish chat show, Skavlan.

Tom said: “She commented on her height compared to some of the other athletes in the room and because me and the other athletes were quite small, she said, ‘Maybe I should try gymnastics’.

“She was fully game to get involved in the sport.”

The Queen’s comments came during a Buckingham Palace reception, attended by her late husband Prince Philip, in 2016.

Just one year later, when presenting an MBE to Olympic champion Max Whitlock, Her Majesty reaffirmed her love for gymnastics.

At the time, Max recalled how the Queen had said she “loved watching the gymnastics because the stuff that we do doesn’t seem possible”.

While the Queen herself is not involved in any Olympic sports, Princess Anne was previously a competitor in the 1976 Olympic Games as part of the equestrian aspect of the event.

Princess Anne is now President of the British Olympic Association and a Member of the International Olympic Committee.
