Rainbow legend Freddy Marks dies just five years after marrying co-star

Freddy Marks who is best known for starring in children’s programme Rainbow, has tragically died aged 71.

The star passed away on Thursday, however the cause of his death is not known as of yet.

The British musician who married his co-star wife five years prior was one of Rainbow’s musical trio along with Jane Tucker and Rod Burton, which ran on TV screens from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Freddy and his other cast members appeared alongside Bungle and Zippy as they regularly played catchy tunes for children.

Not only this, but the trio also had success in their show, Rod, Jane and Freddy, which aired for ten years during the 1980s.

Once he graduated in 1971, Freddy embarked on a career in theatre and had a starring role in The Rocky Horror Show in the West End.

But it was his role in Rainbow in 1979 that he became most known for when he replaced Roger Walker on the show.

Rod, Jane and Freddy were talented musicians and wrote over 2,500 songs during their 3 decades while on TV, and also wrote and produced 10 albums, 24 videos, and even dabbled in jingles for radio and songs for pantomimes.

Rainbow ran from 12 November 1972 until 31 December 1992.

The popular series was revived by HTV in 1994 until 24 March 1997 and had two different formats from the original Thames series.

The new series also included different cast members and the original series was initially conceived as a British equivalent of much loved US hit series Sesame Street.
