Richard E Grant's wife Joan Washington dead aged 64 as he shares tribute

Richard E Grant has paid a touching tribute to his wife Joan Washington who died on Thursday evening.

The actor shared the news on Twitter on Friday morning with a loving video of the pair dancing and singing together as he said his “heart was broken”.

The pair were dancing along to Only You, as he wrote: “Joan, love of my life and giver of life to our daughter Olivia.

“Our hearts are broken with the loss of your life last night. 35 years married and 38 together.

“To be truly known and seen by you, is your immeasurable gift. Do not forget us, sweet Monkee-mine.”

Richard was met by countless messages as people shared in his devastation, with actress Eva Pope responding: “Oh my heart aches for you… deep condolences Richard. She taught me in that very house.”

Meanwhile, another wrote: “Sincerely sorry for your, and your daughters loss.”

A third person responded: “Oh Richard I’m so sorry to read this. She was clearly a very special person but will always be so. You were clearly a wonderful partnership but will always be so. My deepest sympathy to you and Olivia and sending all good thoughts to you.”

Joan, a voice and dialect coach, first met Richard when she was teaching an acting session at acting school in December 1982.

They married four years later in 1986 and had 35 happy years together, welcoming their daughter Olivia in 1989, while Richard became a stepfather to Joan’s son Tom from her first marriage.

Richard previously stated that he didn’t consider getting married, telling The Independent that he “didn’t think it was necessary”.

He said: “Joan has been married, and she had staunchly said to me that she didn’t want to get married again, and so we’d never talked about it.”

However, after spending six weeks apart, Richard promptly asked Joan to be his wife, and the pair wed and remained together since.

The loving couple went on to continue in their happy lives, while working and raising their daughter Olivia together.

Olivia was referred to as their miracle baby after suffering three miscarriages and the devastating death of their first child Tiffany shortly after she was born prematurely.
