Nobody was more disappointed to see Richard Madeley leave I’m A Celebrity early than the TV presenter himself.
He was forced to leave the competition after going to hospital and then breaking the Covid bubble in the castle.
His daughter Chloe wrote on Instagram after her father’s exit from the show: “Dad’s absolutely fine, we’ve been speaking to him all day and ultimately, he’s just livid he can’t go back in to camp because of Covid restrictions.”
Viewers of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! had hoped that Richard’s notorious lack of filter would cause drama in Gwrych Castle.
He has been no stranger to scandal over the years…
Awkward arrest
Richard was arrested for failing to pay for items, including champagne, at the height of his and wife Judy’s fame on This Morning.
The star was caught out in a Tesco supermarket in Manchester back in 1994.
He was later acquitted of all shoplifting charges, citing a memory lapse for what happened.
Some years later, he said: “I was just not concentrating. I put the food through the till, I forgot to take the champagne out.
“I can handle anything, I can juggle eight balls in the air, and actually I came a horrible cropper. I can joke about it now.
“But that year was horrible. The publicity was mortifying.”
Political gaffe
In October this year Richard was branded a “dinosaur” by GMB viewers for his line of questioning with Labour leader Keir Starmer.
Following Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner’s reported comments about “Tory scum”, Richard asked Sir Keir if he was standing by his colleague.
The host said: “Is it true, as it was reported in several Sunday newspapers yesterday, from well placed sources that you are now sidelining Angela Rayner because of her comments about Tory scum.
“Is that true?”
Sir Keir said: “No that’s not true, every Sunday I get all of the newspapers and faithfully go through them and read lots of things that are apparently happening but bare no relation to the truth.”
Richard then asked: “So she’s still your best girl is she?”
The remark did not go down well with viewers, who thought it was “sexist” and “condescending”.
Royal remark
Only the week before, Richard made another dodgy comment as he and GMB co-host Susanna Reid discussed the environmental Earthshot Prize awards, which featured the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Richard remarked: “She’s so slim isn’t she, Kate,” to which Susanna replied: “She is, isn’t she?”
Richard added: “Tiny, tiny waist,” as Susanna awkwardly laughed before responding: “She looks absolutely terrific.”
