Rowan Atkinson says he's working on Mr Bean 'animated movie' as he's 'too old'

Fans of Rowan Atkinson can rejoice as the comedian and actor appears to be working on a reboot of the iconic character for an upcoming movie.

Rowan, 65, teased that despite a potential remake of Mr Bean, he will be glad to not work on the character again, admitting he doesn’t enjoy the process.

Mr Bean first graced the screens in 1990 alongside his famous teddy bear and lime green Mini Cooper, instantly winning millions of fans.

Despite walking away from the character, Rowan slipped back into his tweed suit for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

Rowan is in the stages of working on a Mr Bean animated movie

While his character is maybe more popular than ever, Rowan dished the beans to Radio Times.

“Watching an adult behaving in a childish way without being remotely aware of his inappropriateness is fundamentally funny,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of more episodes, Atkinson said: “Having made an animated TV series, we’re now in the foothills of developing an animated movie for Mr Bean – it’s easier for me to perform the character vocally than visually.

Despite the huge popularity, he admitted he will be excited to say goodbye to the character

“I don’t much enjoy playing him. The weight of responsibility is not pleasant. I find it stressful and exhausting, and I look forward to the end of it.”

He went on to add: “I don’t actually like the process of making anything – with the possible exception of Blackadder, because the responsibility for making that series funny was on many shoulders, not just mine.

Rowan admitted that it’s “certainly not impossible” that he might one day revisit Blackadder.

Atkinson, who also campaigns in support of free speech, also cautioned against the ‘cancel culture’ of modern society.

He said: “The problem we have online is that an algorithm decides what we want to see, which ends up creating a simplistic, binary view of society.

“It becomes a case of either you’re with us or against us and if you’re against us, you deserve to be ‘cancelled’.”
