Russell Crowe and Chris Hemsworth in talks to co-produce Gladiator sequel

Hollywood’s Chris Hemsworth and Russell Crowe are reportedly in talks to produce a sequel to the hit 2000 film Gladiator.

The movie moguls have allegedly spent hours discussing the idea and sharing inspiration for the script, it has been claimed.

Russell helped make the first film the second-highest grossing film of 2000, grossing at $457 million internationally, by starring as the main character Maximus Decimus Meridius.

The Ridley Scott directed blockbuster secured 11 Oscar nominations, and won five, including Best Actor for Russell’s performance.

Rumours have surrounded the release of a potential sequel since 2018.

The film could be set 20 to 30 years on from the death of Russell’s character Maximus.

Now more predictions are swirling, including that Chris Hemsworth could be set to star as Maximus’s son in the second movie.

Chris’s wife Elsa Pataky apparently suggested the idea.

A source told New Idea: “She’s often joked they could easily pass off as father and son.

“Russell thinks he could be the only man to credibly play his son in a Gladiator sequel.”

The Hollywood duo starred together in the film Thor: Love and Thunder, which they filmed in Sydney.

A source added: “Chris is in awe of Russell. He hangs off his every word and Russ has really taken him under his wing.”

Chris will once again be reprising his iconic role as god of thunder Thor, with Russell’s role not yet revealed for the 2022 release.

Among its sparkling roster, the Marvel film also includes Chris Pratt, Natalie Portman, Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

And Chris and wife Elsa were spotted attending a South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby game with the cast, including Russell.

Russell shared the snap of him with the lovebirds on a boat, grinning at the camera, after he joined the cast in March.

He looks excited to be in Australia and even more delighted to be sitting with Chris and Elsa.

Fans were quick to comment with their own predictions.

“Thor x Gladiator drop next week,” one penned.

Someone else wrote: “What an awesome trio!”

And another fan typed: “Thor and Zeus”.

It comes at a time of tragedy for Russell, whose dad recently died on a regional Qantas flight from Sydney at the age of 85.

John Alexander Crowe died on board the aircraft, which was bound for Coffs Harbour, last Tuesday.

Passengers said that a doctor and the staff tried to resuscitate him as the flight continued.

“They basically gave him CPR for who knows how long… probably 18 to 20 minutes,” one told 7News.

“They worked tirelessly and continued after the flight had landed.”

Russell penned a heartbreaking note to his Twitter followers to share his own grief.
